Best Reserve Guide?

We'll be in Monteverde for 3 nights (2 full days) March 17 - 19, 2009.

We're planning to do the Selvatura treetop walkways/zipline combination tour one day. Anybody have an opinion on how these treetop walkways compare to the Arenal Hanging Bridges?

We'd also like to do one guided morning hike in one of the reserves, and one guided evening hike. Recommendations for guides for either of both of these hikes? Which reserve do you think is best for birding? I'd really like to see a quetzal.

Is it feasible to schedule an activity on the day of our transfer in (we'll be doing the van-boat-van from Arenal)? I had thought maybe we could do the evening reserve hike that day?

Thanks for your help!

1. Re: Best Reserve Guide?

Adrian Mendez was our guide for a morning hike at the Monteverde Reserve, and he was EXCELLENT. We got there early, and wound up seeing 6-8 different quetzals.

This was in mid-February.

2. Re: Best Reserve Guide?

We have hired Andres Alvarado as our private guide for the night hike, mornning hike in Santa Elena (and spoted the quetzal !) and afternoon hike in Selvatura Hanging bridges. He was worth every penny as both his knowledge about nature and his English are exceptional. His web site is http://forestalive1.blogspot.com/ . For bird spotting the best place is next door to your lodge early morning! The Santa Elena forest is more "open" and thus spotting birds is easier and there were much less people on the trails then in Monteverde.

4. Re: Best Reserve Guide?

We too hired Andres Alvarado as our private guide a few days ago and we too spotted 4 of the quetzals, Motmots, tons of other birds (sorry, Andy - we didn't write the all down but my pictures are amazing!!), and Howler Monkeys.

Andy is among the most sincere, knowledgeable and honest indivduals we have ever met. His respect for nature and his immense knowledge base just blew us away. You can't go wrong with Andy. Have him take you to see the humingbirds.

If you're doing the Arenal Hanging Bridges we had great experience with Javier from Pura Vida tours (puravidatrps.com ). Javier is a young biolgist-in-training, perhaps an Andy-to-be when he gets older.

Saw a toucan, many more birds (sorry, again ..) and a poison Blue Jeans Dart frog.

Has anyone participated in the official guided tours provided by the Nature Reserve itself? any good?
