If you are considering hiring a guide while you're in Monteverde, I would recommend you check out Andres Alvarado. He was our guide at Monteverde Preserve, and he really made our morning a wonderful success. He is a trained biologist, so he really knows his stuff. Thanks to your recommendation we have been privileged to have Andy as our private guide in Monteverde. He was everything you said and more. Fun and educational and in love with nature and his job. Worth every dollar we paid him (and he has great prices, according to local hotel owner).
I would also highly recommend Andres Alvarado and his company, Forest Alive. Andres and his colleague Greivin were our guides in the Monteverde and Santa Elena reserves, as well as the hanging bridges and a night walk. They are passionate about the area and made our trip much more enjoyable. Their rates are reasonable and they took care of all logistics, including transportation to/from our hotel. I can't imagine going on a group tour after our experience with Andres.
