monteverde arenal

Hello

can we see 100% sure the red lava in Arenal?

how much time do you recommend for the "standard" hike? is it possible without guide?

can we combine the same day monteverde and arenal ? (we are two sport people)

. If yes how you recommend to do the connection?

thanks!

I'm afraid I have bad news for you. Arenal is not active; in fact, even when it is one would not typically see red lava. It is still a spectacular view if the skies clear.

There is no "standard" hike. There are several places with trails and options from a few ours to all day. You will not see the volcano much during the green season, though.

The trip between Arenal and Monteverde is about three hours and these are not two places that can be combined in a single day. I would recommend at least two full days in each place.

For 100% red flowing lava you should go to Big Island, Hawai'i. While Arenal volcano is an active volcano, at this moment (a moment in volcano life, about 10 years in human life) is in dormant state. What could be described as a "standard hike" might be walking the Old lava trail inside the Volcano Arenal National Park, It is easy to do it on your own. You cannot combine Monteverde and Arenal in the same day, no matter how sporty you are. Or better to describe: you can combine Monteverde and Arenal in the same day: you start from either location and use the van-boat-van transfer in the morning, and in the afternoon you will already be in the other location. Only one caveat: going back to starting location within the same day is not possible. No matter how sporty you are.

We got to see it back in the day - very cool. The hotels used to call you in the middle of the night if something was happening, and you could get up and watch it. Not lava per se, but big boulders rolling down the side of the volcano and steam pouring out the top. It sounded like loud rolling thunder. Hasn't been that active for several years unfortunately. You can still see steam at the top sometimes; we saw it on our last trip. Agree with the others that you can't do both Arenal and Monteverde in the same day. The road to get there is long and bumpy. Arenal is worth three or four days and Monteverde two or three. You wouldn't want to get there and turn around and come back.

Types of connections between Arenal and Monteverde: https:/…option-1 . Some of them are "adventure connections", I.e. transportation and tour. This Co has a lot of reviews on TA.

These guys are less expensive by US$7.00 pp for the jeep-boat-jeep option: https:/… . Your hotel in the first destination can also suggest options for the 2nd location, too.

We used Desafio for the connection - about thirty dollars per person. The Jeep Boat Jeep cuts across the lake.

we stayed near La Fortuna, and went to the eastern post of the Childrens Eternal Rain Forest. its the same preserve that is found in Monteverde. Its called Pocosol. While it doesnt have much in the way of touristy stuff its untouched. The 4x4 only road there was magical and the hikes are remote. You are truly experiencing nature alone and deep in the rain/cloud forests. Its also about 1 hour from La Fortuna so you dont have to circle all around to Monteverde....and the 8 or whatever hours that takes by road.

Have fun!
