Snorkeling in Puerto Viejo

Is there a place that we can snorkel from the beach without taking a tour?

Cahuita has some good snorkeling, Cubanon, Geckoe, or Colinisto the DE's over that way will know more about where to go beyond that.

Cheers

Best snorkeling from beach is a South side of Punta Uva, just off Arrecife Restaurant/Hotel. By the way i also think is the most beautiful beach in Costa Rica.

Best spot from the beach is Punta Uva by Arrecife. Manzanillo is also possible. It all of course depends on conditions, after rain the visibility will be poor.

Mostly the days are fine with some good rain at night. There may be the occasional shower during day time as well but so far nothing to stop you from fully enjoying the Caribe Sur.

Thank you very much for the replies. We are going for our first time in November. We are experienced snorkelers and are not really interested in a guided tour.

Hopefully early November, is usually better for snorkeling before the rains start later that month.

If snorkeling is really important to you, I would not count on proper conditions. November is traditionally the rainiest month. However last year was dry, but still waves kick up in November.

I have been to CR several times and would say that if you have snorkeled elsewhere, you will probably be disappointed. You'll see some fish, but the conditions are often not good and there is not much of a reef except at Cahuita. If snorkeling is a must, you're better off in Belize , Honduras, or Panama.

You can not snorkel off the beach at Cahuita. You are required to take a boat out although you can ususally arrange this in town pretty easily the day you want to snorkel. Much of the reef is dead but there are plenty of fish out there when we were there.

We have snorkeled the reef at Manzanillo swimming out from the beach and found quite a lot of fish and some live coral there but it does not compare to the reef off the Yucatan and Belize. We've not had any luck snorkeling at Punta Uva but the sea has to be fairly calm to snorkel close to the cliffs on the NW side of the point.
