Has Tamarindo changed?

Opinions wanted: We went to a wedding in June 2005 and stayed at the Cala Luna. Now we're thinking of getting married there. But I've heard the town has changed in some controversial ways. I don't know the details, but it sounds like they paved some roads and that it's got some reports of criminal activity that it wasn't known for 2 years ago. Has anyone been there recently? We loved it so much but don't want to be disillusioned if we go back.

I am a bit discouraged about Tamarindo now. We were planning to spend 4 days here in January before moving on for the last 4 nights of our trip. I have been to and loved Manuel Antonio, does anyone have any suggestions for better places to stay we are flying into Liberia and do not want to spend a ton of time traveling in a car. Looking for a relaxing beach vacation but mixed with activites such as surfing, and day trips.

Thanks

Travelrd - consider Playa Grande. It is located across the esturary from Tamarindo and just 5 minute boat ride away. Many great things to say about Playa Grande. Just visit the hotel reviews and forums for Playa Grande here on tripadvisor to get ideas. This way, you can get both a vacation in a national park and time in Tamarindo.
