Trying to decide if Tamarindo is a good fit for us

My dilemma is finding a place in Costa Rica that is close enough to most activities that we won't have to spend half our vacation traveling. How far is the volcanoes and white water rafting and canopys from Tamarindo? Thanks for all your help and advice.........

Depends on which volcanoes and rafting trips. From Rincon de la Veja to Tamarindo is only 2 hours:

If you want to get to the Arenal area, its 4.5 hours and usually requires an overnight stay. For a general orientation:

Maybe you can also look at Manuel Antonio National PArk...basically everythink you are looking for...about 4 hours from Arenal Volcano...

Good idea...maybe fly into SJO...drive to Arenal 3 hours...a couple nights there...the best zip lines in the country...hot springs...canopy...rafting...then drive to the beach...4 hours from there at Manuel Antonio....then back to San Jose...3 hours!

Hi Dot...

Best to divide and conquer CR

beaches are 2 far from Volcano to do easily in a day so

I usually rent a car www.servicecarrental.com go to

www.arenal.net

then

www.tamarindo.com

3-4 hours away

I recommend 2 locations as well. Arenal for canopy tours, rafting and volcano fun. And Manuel Antonio for the beach area. If you go to 2 places, everything is very central and close to each one and you will only have to travel between the 2 which is a beautiful drive!

Hope this helps,

Instead of using Road Advisor's ridiculous itinerary involving 14 hours of driving, fly into Liberia then drive two hours to Arenal, 3 hours to Tamarindo and then one hour to Liberia again (6 hours total). On top of the saved time, you'll get to see the better beaches in the Tamarindo area and avoid the absolute lunacy of driving in and around San Jose.

Flying to Liberia is great and sometime expensive option, most people chose SJO for that reason, then drive to Arenal and on to another beach town, eother Tamarindo, MA, or the Caribbean. lot of time on the roads is way of life for visitors to Costa Rica, but is enjoyable.

We spent at least 14 hours on the road during 11 days. I wouldn't trade that time for anything. It gets you out of the tourist areas and let's you see the way people live, get around on bikes - walking - & horses, kids in uniform headed for school, fruit stands, sodas, cattle, slices of Costa Rican rural life, and how the landscape slowly changes from locale to locale. Best road trip ever!

I agree that roadadvisor's itinerary is a great way to see CR. Driving around CR is 1/2 the fun of the vacation, IMO. You see scenery and towns that you would never see otherwise.

On our first trip to CR, we flew into SJO then drove straight to Tamarindo (5 hrs). Then we drove to Arenal (5 hrs), stayed two nights, and decided we wanted to go back to the beach (Hermosa 4- hrs). Then we drove back to SJO airport at the end of the trip (5 hrs). I wouldn't trade that experience for anything!

Regards.
