Rental Car in Costa Rica

We will be renting a car while in Costa Rica. I was looking into a minivan as we will have a party of six. I have heard the roads are really bad. Should I look into something with AWD\4WD or will the mini-van be ok. We are staying right on the beach and going to some of the mall towns in the area for dinner\lunch.

A minivan will be fine. This is what most tour companies and shuttle services use so no problem. The Playa Flamingo area has decent roads, although most not paved - good gravel. The highways from SJO airport are paved and in good shape so no worries there

We will actually be driving from LIR instead of SJO. WHt about the roads between Flamingo and Tamarindo\Brasalito?

Our roadas are not bad at all...some drama queens that have nothing better write about it...will said that our roads are bad...of course some secondary roads are not highways...in your case a mini van will do the job...

Flamingo and Tamarindo ...great road...you will drive by Brasilito going or coming from Flamingo..if you are planning to drive very close to the beach...of course a 4x4 is the vehicle...but in most of our beaches you can not drive into the beach...

Please common sense...everything is going to be OK!

Just buckle up and enjoy the ride in PARADISE!

From Flamingo to Brasilito is just a few kilometers on a road that is part gravel and then paved. You could walk it or ride your bike even.

From Flamingo to Tamarindo is good paved road except for the last part which is gravel part of the way. No problem, you will just need to slow down. It's not like it's a one-lane road with huge mud holes - just a well-traveled gravel road.

All the "usual suspects" - Hertz, Avis, Alamo, National,, Budget - plus Service, Solid, Adobe, Tricolor. Service comes highly recommended. Mapache is another choice for a local company and not a franchise.

You can search this forum for more discussions of rental car companies. Use the search function and you can order the results by date.

You can also just google the various companies and discussions on Trip Advisor will show up.

Stay away from Thrifty and Economy and any other rental car company that seems "too good to be true" because it probably is.

We used Vamos last month and had a great experience, they let us use a GPS for free for liking them on facebook, gave us a cooler to use which was a great help, cell phone for emergencies. The website gives you a complete quote as opposed to many like Avis, Budget, etc that do not include mandatory insurance, people that rent from these get a BIG surprise when the cost doubles, be careful.

The roads are just fine for the most part, but are dirt, gravel and bumpy just as the would be in any rural area. Have fun!

Specifically on the roads from SJO to the Arenal Lodge and back (with a stop over in Poas) would a corolla be ok in the last week of July.

I got the impression that these are all well traveled roads but would like to know from someone who knows with certainty.

thanks!!
