American dollars

we are going to Playas del Coco next week and the comments have been to bring small bills. However, would the grocery stores take $50 bills? I am thinking the Supermercado or Luperon or Super Compro stores.

Possibly not. Most places won't take anything bigger than a $20 unless they know you.

Yeah, I agree with Sara. You can't count on them accepting 50's. You can use a credit/debit card or just use Costa Rican colones. You can exchange your 50's or 100's at the bank for Costa Rican colones or smaller US dollars. You can also use one of the ATM's.

If the purchase is large and there hasn't been a "wave" of counterfeit dollars recently, then maybe they would accept it. But be sure to have a "Plan B."

If you are driving to Coco stop by Desyfin Sucursal Guanacaste / Liberia Centro Comercial Papagayo Do it Center, Local No.1

Teléfono (506) 2667-1020 desyfin.fi.cr/pages/… , you will get the best rate for $. Or use banks to exchange, just for what you will need in colones , the rest like tours and hotels, pay directly in $.

Just returned and all larger restaurants, super markets and the casino take $100's...the smaller sodas may not but going to the bank is an easy way to change your money...not sure about the bars as we did not go to any exclusively

Really? Good to know. Definitely not the case on the Caribbean Coast where anything larger that a $20 is tricky!

Do not count on stores or restaurants accepting $50's or $100's. I can't tell you the numbers of stores I've been in where there is a sign that says they won't accept them.

The very large supermarkets may or may not accept them. It kind of depends on whether there has been notifications of counterfeit bills in circulation in which case, it would be more difficult.

Just do yourself a favor and reserve your large cash for paying large-ticket items such as lodging or tours. If you go into a supermarket and buy $10 worth of stuff and pay with $100, it's just as "rude" here as it is anywhere else.

As Sara says - not everywhere in the country is the same.

I always do this: if the price is in dollars, pay in dollars. If the price is in colones, pay in colones.

And check the exchange rate for dollars. I was trying to avoid going to the ATM and asked if I could pay in dollars at the book store who said they would accept them but at 475 colones to the dollar - a shocking rate!

Hi Sara F--re you recent post: what is a non-shocking rate of exchange for US dollars? I'm planning on taking 20's and some 10's, and will also be able to use my us bank's atm card to get colones. Just curious what a 'normal' exchange rate I can expect (not asking for official, just in your experience). Thanks!
