The new RIU is about 40 minutes from Tamarindo by the Monkey Trail...also...Four Seasons...MArriot Pinilla...

But I think RIU is the one AI besides Paradisus Playa Conchal!

Just buckle up and enjoy the ride in PARADISE!

Another is the Barcelo Langosta, it is within easy walking distance of Tamarindo. However, it's not as nice as the Paradisus Conchal which is a 30-minute drive from Tamarindo.

As a good rule of thumb, wave come with undertow, talk to the locals about a place that safe for you.

The Barcelo Langosta is within walking distance to the Tamarindo, not quite so easy if you're carrying a surfboard, but still do it every day. One of the nicest features about the Tamarindo surf is that its sandy beach is large enough for different levels of surfing abilities.

Judging undertows is a tricky business. Depending on tides and swell directions, most any beach anywhere can develop one. As was mentioned check with the locals. One extra piece of advice. If you can only swim 2mph and you have a slow undertow of only 2.1mph, your still in trouble! They don't need to be fast. On the beach-side of the Barcelo Langosta, there is a very good lifeguard. Also, in front of Capitan Suizo Hotel is a protected area of the beach-side that is very safe.

Yes, there is a lot to do in Tamarindo and here is an orientation to the neighborhood link to help you get started exploring:

You may also want to check out Kelly's Surf Camp. They do the whole surfing thing with breakfast, airport pick-up, etc and they put you in really nice condos or houses.

The Langosta Barcelo could be is the place. While the hotel is not as exclusive as the JW Marriott or the Paradisus Conchal, it is very nice and clean with a large pool. However, while the surf in front of the hotel is sometimes good for intermediate and advanced surfers, it's not a suitable for learning and the surf schools don't take beginning students there.

However, there is no problem letting the 18-year old take the 15-minute walk to town, select a surf shop for lessons, and at the end of the day just store his surfboard at their shop till the next day.

Witch's Rock Surf Camp is all about surfing and is a fun place! It makes you want to get into surfing. Kelly's Surf Shop is also a very friendly surf shop. We have many more surf shops just across the street from the beach where they typically give surf lessons.

Another option, if you could compromise, stay at a vacation villa with smaller, but private pool with daily maid service - maybe a B&B. This would free yourself to get out and enjoy some of the fantastic restaurants in Tamarindo. Just some ideas....
