travel time

We were wondering what the travel was like from San Jose to Nicoya (specifically Samara). We are planning to rent a car. Is it lengthy and difficult?

The drive is about 4 hours from SJO...minutes more minutes less...the road is in great condition...take the Amistad Bridge by Limonal...that is the best way...

Nothing to worry easy nice ride...

Buckle up and enjoy the ride in PARADISE!

Hi, We took a different road in - and found ourselves stranded on a dirt road unable to cross a river that had been formed in a day during the rain (traveled in May)! So, just know that it is different travelling in Costa Rica - for us, we encountered many dirt roads and, as described, unexpected conditions. But we didn't take the drive described above - we came in from Arenal Volcano. Apparently there are roads that can't be used during rainy season and our map didn't make that clear.

That said, we loved renting a car & enjoyed the area very much! In fact, we are planning to return again next summer and will rent a car again.

Humm very interesting about your drive to Samara...from Arenal...since from there is to Tilaran...good raod...thendown to Pan Am Hwy all the way to Cañas...and you can from there back track to Limonal...or drive to Liberia and then maybe you took some roads around the beaches that are just dry time roads...

Any way thnk you for sharing with all of us!

Kosborn, I'm also curious as to which road was taken to be stuck on a dirt road....seems to me every time I've taken this route have made the drive many times over the past 17 yrs), the road has always been pavement....must have taken a wrong turn somewhere!! Always an adventure when you get off the main routes!!

Maitlandmom: if you stay on the main routes, you will have no problem! Pay attention to signage, drive carefully, enjoy your vacation!
