travel tips for Costa Rica

my wife and i recently returned from an incredible vacation in costa rica! we did a particular type of trip and it's one that i would highly recommend. instead of our normal 'tropical' type vacation where we camp out at a high dollar resort and lounge by the pool with a paper umbrella in my drink - this trip was the complete opposite. we spent 1-2 nights in each location - did some exciting day trip/excursion in each and then moved on to another area. we spent time at the beach, in the mountains, by a lake, in a cloud forest, in the city, etc. we happened upon an unbelieveable tour company that handled all the arrangements including hotels, transportation, day trips, etc. our activities included exploring nature with private guides, canopy tours (zip lining above the rainforest), white water rafting, horseback riding, etc. every one of these trips was better than the next. if you have specific questions or would like me to turn you onto this tour company (a route i would highly recommend) just drop me a line at onehelluvaguy@hotmail.com. we loved our trip and that country so much that we're planning on moving there as soon as possible! such beauty you've never seen. nice people (who actually LOVE americans - a rarity these days), clean, safe, exciting, etc. i look forward to hearing from you all soon. take care and pura vida! scott

Dear Scott,

nice review. Did you take the malaria pills? Also, did you have any special attire for you eco tours? We're going in two weeks and staying at the Four Seasons and doing tours out of there. Any info that you have would be helpful.

Thanks, ann

hi ann,

my lord... we did EVERYTHING! hep a, hep b, typhoid and the malaria pills. all on the advice of the wonderful CDC. we found, however, that there was really no need for any of it. i think the warnings are completely overstated. we did wear some 'bug shirts' that my mother had bought for us while doing our treks through the various forests. i found the bug population extremely light... only had a few bites when all was said and done. just bring some OFF with DEET and you should be fine. after all, i don't believe they allow bugs in the four seasons! :) have a great trip. scott

liberia airport is a dream, landed and out in 10 minutes,my advice is to book an all inclusive for the first couple of nights..i think you mentioned the four seasons..excellent!($40 taxi from the airport)then you may want to take off and explore..theres so much to see..the weather gets a little cooler the further east you go but the scenery is so diverse,we drove from liberia to san jose and i couldnt believe the difference.that journey via arenal takes 7 hours at least but we flew into one airport and out of the other and im so glad we did...we want to return and see more.SJO was busy, the line to pay the departure tax was 30 mins alone and ther wasnt much in the way of facilities but we had had such an awesome vacation it didnt matter.the night before our depature we stayed at the courtyard marriot in sjo and even thoght it was a good 25-35 mins from the airport it had a cool plaza across from the hotel which had a variety of restaurants(peru, thai, spanish outback steakhouse etc.)that made it a super last night) I know you will have an awesome trip!!

Could you give me some advice. I am looking to book a meeting for a small group. I need a 5 star hotel, all inclusive preferably (I don't know what is best in Costa Rica), and I need to be somewhere on the beach (or somewhere easy to get to) since I have a lot of Europeans coming.

Thanks in Advance for your suggestions

atourist -

The Four Seasons or the Grand Papagayo would suit your purposes. Both are within 25 minutes of Liberia Airport and have facilities for meetings. Both beach front all inclusive hotels.

Paradisus is an excellent all inclusive. It is about a 40 minute ride to Liberia airport. Very hassle free. The best rate we could find (charter air included from DFW) was $1500 per person for 7 nights. They also have an awesome golf course. Our last stay there was in 2003 just after it switched from Melia to Paradisus. I believe it was a name change only (still owned by the Melia chain but they are using the Paradisus name for all of their 5 star all inclusives...please correct me if I'm wrong). The resort itself is huge and sprawling. They have constant shuttles running around the property. The rooms are more like little suites...very nice and clean. The pool is the largest in Central America. The layout is really cool...lots of little coves surrounded by fauna so you always feel like you can find a semi private spot to chill out. The food was pretty good...best I've had at an all inclusive. The beach is very nice...uncrowded and easy access from the resort. They have a small casino and disco, swim up bar, lots of physical activities, etc. We originally started out stay at the Barcelo Langosta which was rated by Adventure Tours as a 4 star resort. The Paradisus is rated 5. Their star system must have a huge span between 4 and 5 because the Barcelo was no where near the resort the Paradisus is...spend the extra money. You won't be disappointed!

Sounds like it's right up our alley. We've got a couple of teenagers and want to keep them excited. We'll be traveling in July, not the best time weather wise, but schools out then. Let us know te tour company name; I appreciate it so much.
