Agenda for 5 nights at Finca Luna Nueva Lodge

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

* Friday July 5th – arrive in SJO at 10:50 am, pick up our 4x4 (from Mapache), find somewhere for lunch and picking up some light groceries, then drive to Finca Luna Nueva. Not planning on much else that day, though it might be nice if we could get the night hike at the lodge. We’ll see how exhausted we are after traveling all day. It might just be a night to hang out at the pool.

* Saturday July 6th –morning farm tour (at the lodge), lunch in La Fortuna, then hiking at Arenal Observatory Lodge – perhaps with a guide (?)

* Sunday July 7th – 9am guided nature tour at Arenal Hanging Bridges, then hiking at Arenal Volcano National Park. Will the Arenal Hanging Bridges be too crowded if we make a reservation and use the guides from there? If it’s likely to be crowded, then we’ll want to skip it.

* Monday July 8th -- Canopy Tour then hot springs, frog farm, etc at Los Lagos. Maybe the night rainforest guided hike at Finca Luna Nueva.

* Tuesday July 9th – we have the 1:00 volunteer tour booked at Proyecto Asis. My boys can’t wait! We might just chill out at the lodge in the morning. Any suggestions for a lunch spot between our lodge and Proyecto Asis?

* Wednesday July 10th – checking out and driving up to Bijagua and Casitas Tenorio. What’s on the way between these two locations? Or should we just drive up and check out their farm and relax?

Are we missing anything? Canyoning looks like so much fun – but that won't happen on this trip We had looked into Venado Caves, but I don’t think we’ll have time and I don’t want to overbook. I will be posting our tentative agenda for our other locations in the appropriate forums (Bijagua, Papagayo, Alajuela). Thanks for any suggestions. :-)

Looks good. Maybe add horseback riding? Does your hotel have hot springs?

You understand where the Lodge is located, right? It's not really close to La Fortuna or Arenal Volcano. But it is a beautiful place - as long as you understand the location.

From Finca Luna Nueva Lodge to Casitas Tenorio:

Go to La Fortuna and get on the road that goes around the lake - towards Tilaran. Once you get to the end of the Lake, you will turn right on a paved road. There should be a sign there that says Tierra Moreno. There should also be a small sign for Tenorio Lodge. On your left, you will see a large open space with a couple of buildings. There is a triangle "island" at this turnoff.

Follow this road past a school (speed bumps!) and through Nuevo Arenal (German Bakery!) until you see a gravel road off to the right. The sign will say "Proyecto Eolico Movasa" and there should be a sign that says "Upala" and another sign for Tenorio Lodge. Turn right on this road.

Follow this road all the way to Rt 6. (You will pass giant windmills -- kind of like "Star Wars") The gravel road dead-ends at Rt 6 and you will turn right to get to Bijagua which will be about 7 miles. (You will cross the Rio Tenorio and then go through the village of Rio Naranjo before Bijagua). Once in Bijagua, look for the Musmanni Bakery on the right -- the turn to Casitas Tenorio is just past that -- turn right and follow the signs about 3 km to the farm.

Thanks for the directions! Although we already have the waterproof map everyone talks about and will have a GPS in our car, I'm still old-fashioned enough to want written directions with landmarks, too.

Yes, we are aware that Finca Luna Nueva Lodge is not too close to Arenal. That's fine with us. We wanted to be somewhere that we really felt "in nature" and where we do some hiking right at the lodge.

What I gave you is a shortcut. If you use the GPS, it will probably take you a different/longer way. On your map, look for 142 around the lake and then you can see the road that goes to Tierras Moreno. Then, you will go on 927 to Rt 6 and north through Rio Naranjo to Bijagua.

Hi there, please can I check what you meant when you said that Finca Luna is not near Arenal etc? Is it not a good base to explore the volcano etc? We are hoping to stay there and also do Arenal at the same time.

It's about 35 minutes from La Fortuna to Finca Nueva Luna. If you have a car, it's probably not a big deal if you don't mind the travel time. Funca Nueva Luna is a beautiful place.

We loved Finca Luna Nueva Lodge but I wouldn't stay there without a rental car unless all you planned to do was enjoy the activities and tours offered on-site. We wound up doing three guided tours with Ishmael: the farm tour, the rainforest mysteries trail, and the longer cavalonga trail. We also enjoyed the pool, hot-tub, and just wandering around on our own. Breakfasts were delicious! For us, it was definitely worth being a half-hour outside of town. The ride was shorter to get to Proyecto Asis and the La Fortuna Falls, and quite a bit longer to get to the Hanging Bridges and Los Lagos canopy tour.
