Overnight Spot Between Arenal & Papagayo?

We are looking for a cool-off-the-beaten-path-kind-of place between Arenal and Papagayo for an overnight spot. Any suggestions?

The only one that comes to mind is La Pacifica in Canas. Beautiful location in a jungle-like setting on a working farm with an excellent restaurant -- and -- it's a working "hacienda" - or huge farm/ranch.

It's only 3.5 hours or so from Arenal to the Papagayo area (depending on where you are going) so not sure an overnight would be worthwhile.

I'd still consider the area around Rincon de la Vieja and Tenorio off the beaten path....

Tenorio/Rio Celeste - Rio Celeste Hideaway, Celeste Mountain Lodge, national park and hike are amazing. I know there;s some smaller lodges in the area as well, just not as familiar with those. I've seen and stayed at these two. Its a little out of the way, but still sort of on the way from Arenal to Papagayo area. Same deal with Rincon de la Vieja, not on the direct drive but not horribly out of the way either. More hotel options there: Blue River, Borinquen, Buena Vista, Guachipelin, Canyon de la Vieja. Lots of day activties, canyoning, horseback riding, hot springs with the mud (different from just the waters in Arenal area).

New Volcano Brewing company has a small hostel, on the Tilaran side of the lake.

The Tenorio National Park area is one hour from the main highway - Rt 1 - just north of Canas. Not really "on the way" at all.

It really depends on whether you want someplace that is truly "on the way" or something a bit "out of the way but not too far."

Same with the Rincon de la Vieja area. And yes, Blue River is WAY OUT OF THE WAY - almost two hours from the main highway and nowhere near the entrance to the National Park. Besides which, if you are staying in the Papagayo area, it's really easy to do a day trip to the Rincon de la Vieja area.

However..... if interested in going to the Tenorio area from Arenal, I can give you a shortcut which will take you through the countryside and is very scenic.

One place to check out might be the Volcano Brewing Co & Resort. Its on the main road on the far west end of the lake. Honestly have no idea what the hotel is like, but stopped in at the microbrew/restaurant for a beer and the grounds and brew pub were really nice - decent microbrew beer, food looked good, stunning views over the lake, and fun crowd hanging out. I suspect that others in the forum could weigh in on the hotel part.
