help w/arenal- la fortuna itinerary please

I'm planning to go to Arenal/La Fortuna, but questioning logistics while there. We'd like to stay there for approx. 2nights, but i'm not sure if we should stay at silencio del campo, or arenal observatory. With that said, we were going to take a bus from the airport to the arenal/la fortuna area, and then fly from arenal/la fortuna to quepos afterwards. Is it cost effective to rent a car for a few days to get around there, or are cabs a good/fairly priced option? HELP! thanks

You need a car (preferably 4WD)if you stay at AOL(Areanl Observatory Lodge) as its far out of town on a rough, occasionally muddy, road and cab rides can really add up ($20 each way into town). If you're simply going to stay put, eat and hike at AOL that's not such a big issue, but most visitors want to check out the hot springs, a canopy tour and the waterfall so the cab rides could put a dent in your budget.

Recommendations change if you're staying at El Silencio as you're on the main road much closer to town and cab rides are much less expensive. Organized excursions will pick you up at your hotel and cabs into town or the hot springs aren't much.

However if you are getting a car to get around at Arenal consider simply renting one at the airport and driving yourself as the road is scenic and in good condition (assuming you're coming from the San Jose Airport). You can't actually take a bus from the San Jose airport. You need a taxi into Alajuela for the public bus or a taxi to a nearby hotel for pickup by Interbus shuttles which are at fixed times. It is possible pickup a rental car near the SJO airport (the rental companies are actually offsite too) and drop it off in Arenal if you don't need it for the rest of the trip. There would be a dropoff charge. You don't need 4WD unless you're heading to AOL or unpaved roads after Arenal (like Monteverde).

Silencio del Campo has a huge condo building that is going up right beside it right now. Depending on when you're going, you might be hearing construction noise if it's still happening. The new building is really out of character with everything else. It's an eyesore in my mind.

I stayed at the Lost Iguana. We LOVED it. Would definitely recommend it, but it is out of town, so it would depend on how much time you wanted to spend at the hotel versus in town. We met someone who stayed at AOL and they saw the lava. They were the only group that we heard actually saw it, so if lava is a priority, definitely AOL is the right choice.
