Getting to Guanacaste region

I am thinking about a trip to Costa Rica. The Guanacaste region looks so beautiful. Do I need to rent a car to get there from the San Jose airport or is there some public transportation? How long is the trip?

You can fly into Liberia LIR which is in the Guanacaste Province and about 30 minutes from the nearest beach. From SJO, the northern Pacific/Guanacaste area is 4.5-5 hours.
