Vacation rental location question: HELP!

We are a family of 6 (youngest is 13). We travel first week of January.

The rentals on vrbo etc seem to be either downtown La Fortuna, in Castiilo, around the Lake, or 1 near the Palma area. I'm imagining most days we will be out and about hiking (sounds like we are always driving 30-45 min to get anywhere!) and head back before dark to our lodging. What area is best?

Or should we just splurge go to a hotel/lodge that has a great pool, restaurant, and/or thermal spa?

I've got to make a choice and just move on already. Help!!!

Around the lake is generally thought to be the best location. Great views of Lake Arenal and the volcano and not too far from activities and La Fortuna. Although - it will depend on how close/far away from La Fortuna the house is.

This might help: costa-rica-guide.com/travel-map/…

El Castillo is a very nice area - but - also pretty isolated and about 40 minutes from La Fortuna.

Really, it kind of depends on the "where exactly " for all these areas. Some parts of La Fortuna would be fine ... others not so much. And if it's far far away from La Fortuna, "around the Lake" - that might be a problem.
