La Fortuna

Hi everyone,

I am traveling to Costa Rica at the end of June for 8 nights and I will be ending my trip in La Fortuna. My flight leaves SJO at 12:30pm on July 1st. I booked a room a few blocks from the bus station and had decided to use public transportation to get to the airport, but starting to have 2nd thoughts. We are a couple. Below is what i am considering:

Reference: visitcostarica.com/ict/paginas/LEYES/pdf/Iti…

5:40am departure: Fortuna to Ciudad Quezada (1 hour)

7:00am departure: Ciudad Quezada to San Jose (2.5 hours)

Arrive at 9:30am and hopefully get dropped off at airport.

Has anyone tried this before? Any thoughts? Is public transportation reliable? Or do you suggest I just pay for a private shuttle?

That doesn't give you much wiggle room. Most airlines suggest being at SJO airport 3 hours early. I'm usually early as I don't want to be in the back of the line when they're checking in an entire plane load of passengers. The check-in lines can move painfully slow due to overweight bags, paperwork issues, etc.

Remember at the airport you have to pay the exit tax (preferably in cash), fill out the form on the back of the tax receipt, line up for check-in, then clear security.

I'd consider other options such as spending the night before in Alajuela or somehow arriving earlier on the morning of your flight.

Thanks for the info. I'll take your advice and arrange alternative transportation. Thanks!

Even that is possible you are taking a chance...try to deal with a direct bus from La Fortuna to Alajuela...that is where SJO is located!

Better off to go with a private transfer. Here are a few good companies in the area:
