Heliconia House at Leaves and Lizards?

My family - 2 adults and 4 young kids (7, 6, 4, 1) - are trying to nail down some accommodations in Arenal for 4 nights in April. We will have just come from a week in Guanacaste at a rental with a private pool and want some definite "jungle time".

We were looking into rentals - but there are actually not that many available around Fortuna. Then we were looking at hotels - but many will not accommodate 6 in a room. Ideally, we'd like to have a separate bedroom (or 2) so we're not all in 1 room.

Has anyone stayed in the Heliconia House at L&L? How is it since it is so close to the entrance?

We'll have our own vehicle and don't mind exploring for an outing each day - though I imagine the location might deter us from going as much otherwise. Any current times on the drive into Fortuna?

Any other cabins/rentals/bungalows....in the area that you would recommend??

Los Lagos has a villa on property with 2 bedrooms, full kitchen, living room, etc. that could accomodate you. Arenal Lodge has a Family Room that is 2 separate rooms, and allows 6 pax in a room. On the higher end, Lost Iguana in the Las Casitas and Celebrity villas, same with The Springs Resort. They have several rooms that would accomodate you, but also on the more expensive side.

Leaves and Lizards is a really neat b and b concept, but its not really a full service resort. Its within 15-20 min driving from the center of Fortuna and still a reasonable distance to most of the local attractions. If you book tours with transportation included, expect to pay a surcharge for a pickup at Leaves and Lizards

I think Los Lagos may be the way to go. It's very popular with young families because of all the activities on the grounds.

We will be making our third stay at L&L next week. It is truely a unique spot - different than anything else in the area. The fact that it is off the beaten path is one of the things that makes it so great. Its a true "unplug and get away from it all" experience - there aren't too many of those places left in the world, Costa Rica included. The views are spectacular and Deb and Steve are amazing hosts. All that said, I've not been inside Helconia, so can't speak personally one way or the other.
