How long is hike to volcano?

We're going to CR next week with 3 children 14, 11 and 8. We have a hike to the Arenal Volcano scheduled as one of our activities. How far is the hike? How long does it take--is it really steep or just a medium hike? Just wondering about my 8 year old's ability.

It depends on which trail you take. Most tour operators utilize the Silencio or Los Tucanes Trails. The Silencio hike is approximately 2 hours, 1 way usually with a shuttle out. The Los Tucanes Trail is approximately 1 1/2 hours each way (3 hours total). Both trails are more like nature walks than hikes, so your 8 year old should not have a problem.

Most hikes are easy...maybe the best for your kids...El Silencio...or try the La Fortuna waterfall...great fro kids!

Just buckle up and enjoy the ride in PARADISE!

The one we did wasn't steep at all; we just kind of wandered down the trail while he talked about the history. We couldn't get that close to the volcano because they have it fenced off. After the little hike, they drove us over to the AOL area to watch the lava, but the weather wasn't too great, so we didn't see much. I wish we had had better visibility.

Volcanogirl, what company did you use for the hike? Was this through the national park?
