volcano view in june?

It sounds like you have to stay at Arenal Observatory lodge to have views of the lava flow. We will be there in June. Will it rain and will the rain obscure the view? We plan to take an evening volcano tour and hope to see the lava flow then. i am just trying to decide on hotel location. We won't have a car so we want to stay somewhere near restaurants, hot spings, and short taxi rides to activities. is it possible to have all this in one place? Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Deb

the weather is always unpredictable, the volcano is often covered by clouds, when you get a clear night do the night lava hike. a car is not necessary in Arenal/La Fortuna, there are taxis everywhere. the whole town has a view of the volcano but if you want to see the "lava side" AOL is a popular choice

Seeing the volcano is a matter of luck. Of 4 days in La Fortuna, we saw it for 5 minutes early one morning over breakfast and then one other day for much of the afternoon and evening.

I understand however that June is rainy season so it may be iffier.

If you stay at Arenal Observatory Lodge, you will be in the middle of nowhere just off of a very bumpy road.

I would suggest you stay closer to town. El Silencio del Campo about 5 kms. outside of La Fortuna

was our favourite hotel in Costa Rica. It has a wonderful view of the volcano (except for the monstrous hotel being built next door) and wonderful grounds and helpful friendly people. While we had a car, they arranged an individual to take 4 people to view the lava flow at night for $40 USD; while if you are fewer than 4 people, the tours in La Fortuna were charging $15 USD per person.

El Silencio is next door to Baldi Hot Springs and even better, Ecotermales Hot springs, and can get you a discount on entry. You MUST reserve however, although maybe not in June.

They have a good restaurant and cabs can take you anywhere into town.

The short answer to your questions is, no, it's not really possible to have it all in one place...

Lava views are best at AOL and also possible (not as "up close and personal") from Linda Vista and Lost Iguana. The advantage of staying at the lava view hotels is that it's unpredictable when the view will be clear and it often happens in the middle of the night.

None of these hotels puts you in "short taxi ride" distance to La Fortuna where most of the restaurants are. The hot springs are all situated on the way to La Fortuna. Of the three, Lost Iguana is probably the closest and easiest (on paved road the whole way) but multiple taxi rides throughout the day will add up cost-wise.

"Activities" are spread out around the area. AOL will actually put you relatively close to the volcano park (hiking) and SkyTram/SkyTrek (ziplines.) Linda Vista is very close to SkyTram/SkyTrek as well. If you do an organized tour, they will pick you up at your hotel. Many tours charge a small surcharge for pickup at AOL and Linda Vista and some at Lost Iguana as well.

We had a rental car during our stay and found that to be the most convenient.

Actually, we have reservations for Lost Iguana in May and have found out that they do have a shuttle into town and to many of the attractions close by.
