Safe hotel and car hire in Alajuela

We're travelling to CR for the first time at the end of March, and want to find a hotel that's safe and will be a really good start to our trip on the first night - our flight arrives around 8pm. We want to have a hire car delivered to the hotel for the following morning (so we'd like a hotel that will pick us up from the airport), and we plan to head out to Volcan Poas on our first day and will be self-driving thereafter. I looked at the Hotel Buena Vista but was horrified to read of an armed robbery there in November. We're travelling with young children (9 and 11) and the thought of something like this is awful and not at all what I expected at a hotel like this, or in CR anywhere. Would appreciate any advice on where we can stay safely and what we need to do to stay safe during our trip in general.

We really liked Xandari. www.xandari.com. They picked us up from the airport for free.

The very first time we visited Costa Rica, we stayed at the Holiday Inn Express, used to be Hampton Inn, right across from the airport, not on fly path, and many car rental companies share the same parking lot. there is also a Hampton Inn in the same parking lot and a Rosti Pollo Restaurant if you want to grab something to eat. Is a American style hotel, so if you want something with local flavor try the Adventure Inn or Orquideas Inn.

We have stayed at Vida Tropical, a small family run B & B in Alajuela, about $3 taxi from SJO. Very friendly in a safe residential area. Tri-color car rental will p/u

Thanks to all of you who've replied - I'd wondered about sticking to an airport hotel, and this gives me some good ones to try, so many thanks.
