Visa requirements for China/Shanghai

We are doing a stop over in Shanghai whilst travelling from London to Auckland. It's only for 24 hours due to flight timings.

My question is whether we now need to spend £130 on 'transit' visas for us.

The Chinese UK Embassy website says that from January 2013, if you fly to Shanghai, you don't need a visa for a visit of less than 72 hours as long as certain criteria are met.

My question is has anyone been via Shanghai lately and is there anything we need to do in advance? It just seems to simple?

It is just the way the embassy web site says, very simple. One possible issue is your airline ground personnel may not know about this and may deny you boarding because you have no visa. So print out a copy of the rule and be prepared to show it at check in.

So is it safer to pay for a visa. Rather pay than be denied boarding...?

No there is no need to pay for visa. Just have a copy of the rules in the rare case that a boarding agent needs to be educated.

THis rule is not new. No worries. Just have a printed copy of your onward flights for the customs officer in Shanghai. When you clear customs, there is a special lane for it.

Every airline is supposed to know about visa rules and should have this in their system. If (rare event) the airline employee at the airport is too lazy to check, ask for the supervisor.
