Where to live with family?

My husband's job has been transferred to Shanghai - his office will be in Putuo. Our children will attend the French school in QingPu.

My question is, where could we find a decent townhouse (preferably with a garden or close to a public park) which would offer a reasonable commute for everyone?

Any links/ideas/advice for preparing for our departure would be greatly appreciated.

Shouldn't his company help him find a house in the city? They will be the ones most familiar with the city so he should tell him his preference such as being close to the school.

Those two areas are far away, Hongqiao area is near the middle and the area is an expats area, but is out side of "inner circle ring" or downtown.

There are not too many townhouses in Shanghai, except those built in early 1900s.

Depends on your budget. Get ready for long commutes. Big city.

The two places are very far apart. The French School at Qingpu is way out of town. There is a new Pudong campus which may be closer to town. There are very few town houses for rent. Most expats live in apartments. They usually go there, stay in a hotel for a couple of weeks or more, and use a rental agent to help them find apartments.

I agree with drdw - Hongqiao, or at a push Minghang district. It's a foreign friendly area where you have gate communities and villa style housing. These compounds are large houses with private gardens and then a center with usually a swimming pool, creche, gym etc.

Also around this area are foreign supermarkets, easy commutes to the city outside of rush hour and low level housing, you definitely don't feel like you're in a big city. It's super good for families in Puxi.

These kind of houses are usually reserved for those on the big expat package. If you're sending your children to school here it sounds like your husbands company is paying for all this, so make sure they take you to this area.

There's not many people i know with children who don't have a long commute, it's just how it is here. Most of the international schools are way out on the outskirts of the city and kids spend about an hour each way on a bus. It's just how it is. If your kids can handle it, it the benefit will come after school and at the weekends when they can play safely in the compound with their friends or spend not too long walking/being driven to close by areas.

Some good compounds to look at would be Hongqiao Golf Villa, Windsor Court, or Rancho Santa Fe.

If either places cannot be changed ,as both are quite at the outskirts of Shanghai ,among these two i would rather stay somewhere in Hongqiao closer to the childrens school rathe than at Putuo. But then the father has a long journey to make for work.

Hongqiao is the most well developed place closest to the school and there are many expats staying there together with a huge population od japanese,Koreans ,taiwanese etc.But it is clean and lively there with good townhouses and apartments to rent.

Putuo is among the least developed district in Shanghai ,a bit left behind and not a nice place for a good stay. However , you cannot have the best solution suitable for the working dad and the children. This way the children will have a shorter trip to make to school.

Staying in between will not make things better either like at Jingan ,very nice to stay both both needing to make long trips daily making it not practical.

If you need to look for townhouses or apartments for rentals there are many leasing websites and just zoom into the areas you are interested in.
