One day in Shanghai

We have one full day in Shanghai as a stopover (from UK to Australasia) - suggestions for what to do / see etc?

We're both around 30 and quite fit (certainly not athletes, but able to walk around all day!). It'll be our first time in China though we appreciate in one day we are limited as to what we can see. Enjoy museums etc but also like seeing new places / areas (eg wandering The Rocks in Sydney, CN Tower in Toronto......) No specific budgetary constraints - would happily spend £200GBP between 2 of us (not including accommodation / food) if there was something that justified the cost!

All suggestions gratefully received!

Look on the right side of this page and you'll see an item on what to see in Shanghai. I'd suggest a walking tour of the former French Concession area. A walk along the Bund is also good. The Shanghai Museum is quite good also.

Suggest the Big Bus Tours www.bigbustours.com

24 hours ticket, hop-on, hop-off with some freebies for entrance fees, you can cover many sights in a day.

You will not spend that much in one day, no worries.

If the sky is clear, get to the top of one of the two highrise buildings to have a bird eye view of Shanghai.

Before you go get one of the mini pocket buides like Lonely Planet or the DK pocket guide for Shanghai that come with maps.

The Shanghai Museum is excellent & its nearish to Peoples square & Nanjing Road. You can continue to walk down Nanjing road until you reach the Bund & then walk along the pedestrian area alonside the river. You might want to return at night & see the Bund & across to Pudong with all the buildings lit up and highly lighted up boats cruising the river.

Also include the Yuyuan Gardens & Bazaar, the excellent Huxinting Teahouse is in the middle.

From here head to Middle Fangbang Rd ( aso known as Old street area). Its a street lined with shops & teahouses. Nearby is Dongtai Rd Antique area.

Visit a park like Fuxing - lots of fun. Local peopel out ballroom dancing, people exercising & from there you can walk to the French Concession area.

All the places above are not too far apart & easy to see in a day ( if you dont spend too long at the musuem). The Shanghai museum is excellent & it is easy to spend the whole day just there, its huge. So it really depends how much time you have left after you visit it.

Taxis are very cheap & the subway is excellent & English friendly: http://www.exploreshanghai.com/metro/

i think the best way to spent a day in Shanghai is to hire a personal tour guide to have a city tour in the daytime, and in the evening i suggest you watch acrobatic show or take food massage.
