Day trip to Suzhou

What cost should we allow for a day trip from Shanghai to Suzhou?

About how much for the train?

This is what we would like to fit in that day:

-the grand canal cruise

-silk factory

-rickshaw ride

-lion grove the garden of the master of nets

About how much for admission to the things? Would it be good to hire a guide for the day?

No need to hire a guide. I think you should budget about $400 RMB per person for the whole day, including train and food.

No guide needed but a guide book to help you find your way.

Google for the train times, only 30 minutes on the fastest train.

Tour without guide will be a better choice because Suzhou is not a big city and most attractions can be got by taxi wihin 20 min from one to another.

Above entrance fees are listed for your referece

Grand Canal Cruise RMB 150

Rickshaw RMB 80

lion grove the garden or the master of nets both are RMB 30

I took a guide and car only because I needed a place to leave my bags while I toured Suzhou. You dont need a guide or car if you are on a budget but the guide will give you a ton of historical info which I appreciated. But if you just want to see things without knowing the history, go solo. Canal ride is fun but short. Definitely eat at a local restaurant along the canal. 500RMB will allow you to be quite comfortable.
