Visiting China from Shanghai

In Shanghai for business till the 5th May and then have 5 days free to travel. Are there any tours form Shanghai and back to see the Terracotta Army and\or Beijing and\or the Great Wall. Or can one do it by themselves and if so what is the best itinerary. Thank you

If you're here on business, I guess your hotel will be at the upper end, and they will probably have a tours desk who can book everything for you. Bear in mind that the organised tours often side-track you to 'shopping opportunities'.

A five-day Shanghai-Beijing-Xian round trip is feasible, by air or overnight trains. You can turn up at Hongqiao airport and buy a ticket to Beijing from the desk of any of the main 3 airlines. If you get a morning flight, you can do The Summer Palace in the afternoon.

Hire a driver for the day and go early to see the Great Wall. Mutianyu is better than Badaling, allow a day for that, and a day for Forbidden City and surrounding area.

Same with Xian, although you may want to get your hotel to book a ticket for you, and for your return to Shanghai, to make sure of your timing. Again, hire a driver for the day to take you to the warriors.

Trains are more a bit more difficult to book by yourself, the hotel will do it for you. Soft sleeper is the best option. It's 10 hours to Beijing, but you do get to save a hotel.
