Visa free transit? Or visa?

Just curious if if the following itinerary would qualify for the visa free travel exemption: JFK to PVG with layover of 16 hours then to KMG (kumming china) with a layover of 13 hours then REP (siem reap Cambodia). Does it matter if we leave the airport or not? What kind of visa would I have to get?

Thanks so much for your help

No, one can't go to another Chinese city.

Sure you can have multiple stops but then you are limited to 24 hours in China. You seem to exceed this so you need a tourist visa.

Your proposal requires a Chinese visa. But if you route (China Southern Airlines) JFK - CAN - REP, you can have 72 hours in Guangzhou/Guangdong province and use TWOV instead of getting the visa. Assuming you have US passports of course.
