Hi Ivy UK,

During Ramadan, all Malay places will be very busy when people gather, order and wait to eat around 7.15-7.30pm to break fast. It is quite a sight they just wait on the table (with everything ready to eat) just for the clock to click. The fasting time differs from state to state.

Medan Ikan Bakar Umbai / Pernu is about 30mins from Hotel Puri. You should get Puri concierge to hire a cab for you. The taxi driver must wait otherwise, you won't not find a taxi to bring you back. Direction is mostly straight along the coastal road and turn right when you see the huge sign.

I recommend also Portugese Settlement's seafood. Beware of the tout, go to Store No. 7 (Pegasus or some name like that) which serves the best seafood with a combination of local portugese inspired and chinese style cooking. Some people like store no. 1 Seafood Terrace but I don't.

The reason why I recommend Portugese settlement seafood is that with option chinese cooking, you get to order few dishes without all being spicy like vegetable. They have small scallops with garlic butter for example. Crab is a must try with curry leaf and grilled seafood portugese style is unique to Malacca.

Portugese settlement is only 15mins from town and you can get transport there much easier.

Hi IvyUk,

The store no.7 at Portugese Settlement is named Pescado. So store number 7, 1 and number 4 (88 Seafood restaurant ) are safe bets. Other stores may serve bad or horrible food due to the place being filled with tourists on weekend.

Try to go to Umbai or Portugese settlement before 7pm. Not only you could have a view of sunset, you could avoid the long wait after 7.30pm when it may take 30min to 1 hour for food to be served.
