Hi Ian,

The first day of chinese new year 14Feb will see most museums, tourist shops and chinese restaurants close. However, anchor tenants in malls will be open, so are fast food chain restaurants and non chinese ones.

There are still temples, churches in China town and Dutch square that are not close. Second and third days will see most places back to normal.

Hi Yen,

16Feb is already 3rd day of new year, so many shops are back to normal. Most popular place will still be Jonker Walk and the downtown shopping malls like Dataran Pahlawan and Mahkota Parade.

The popular night market however, will not be open till 19Feb09 evening. If possible, try 17-20Feb where all shops should be open and you get to go to the market for a night. Return home Saturday to avoid the terrible jam all over Malaysia highways.

Hi Yen,

If you drive, you may want to try Garden City Apartment where all your family can stay in one apartment. It is however a 10-15min drive to historic center and it can take longer during chinese new year.

If you don't drive, you can take 3-4 rooms in either Equatorial, Holiday Inn or for lower budget, Aldy and Puri. Slightly off center but still within 10-15min leisure walk through old town is Renaissance or City Bayview which are worth considering during this period.
