As said above - Get a Nationwide Flex account - if this isn't possible then commission free TCs are the way to go, just because they're safe, but if you do, don't get denominations bigger than £50 - £100 of Rupees is about 8000 Rs and if the money changer has only Rs50 notes - that's a big wedge of money you'll be squeezing into your wallet

Hi Jock

We only take cash.

We change £20 or £40 at a time leave the rest in the safe.

Better rate with cash than TC although TC's are safer, then again i feel much safer walking round Goa at midnight than i do around centre of Birmingham and i don't have TC's in Brum!!

we are also going to goa for first time on 27th january, i opened a Nationwide flexaccount but they only gave me a cashcard to use at cashpoints, will this work in goa atm's as it doesn't have 'electron' or 'visa' on it - just cashcard?

Just checked my Flex Account card and it says DEBIT CARD on it but also VISA.

See if they will issue you with a debit card, you still have time.

The Nationwide cash card will work in the ATM's no problem. I have the Visa debit card, a friend has the cirrus cash card and we've had absolutely no problems with either.

many thanks for the replies

i will try to upgrade my Nationwide cashcard this week, but if they won't do it at least i know i can use the cashcard.

Do i have to tell Nationwide the card will be used in goa so they don't block it?

thanks for all your help

It wont hurt to let them know you will be in Goa. Although I've had no problems with Nationwide, I have had a card stopped with Barclays and had to phone them from Goa to unstop it.
