Ferry from Fort Morgan to DI

Hello Trip Advisors,

We will be making our first trip to Alabama at the end of September. Staying one week at a beautiful condo near Bay to Breakers community by Fort Morgan. Then, we will be heading to New Orleans on the last Saturday of September.

Just wondering if taking the ferry from fort Morgan to Dauphin Island on a Saturday morning would be a good idea. Opinions are appreciated!

Thanks!

It can be a great way to go. The traffic leaving the island is terrible on Saturdays. You save a few minutes since you already near Ft Morgan. The ride over takes 45 minutes. The Lighthouse Bakery is on the island and names a great breakfast stop. The traffic leaving Dauphin Island will be minimal. Its a straight shot up to I-10. For schedule see Hornblower Ferry.com

Thanks baytraveler!

It is so great to have helpful information from experts! We had read about the Lighthouse for breakfast, so that is good to be re-affirmed, too!

Now, here is another question: What about the ferry on the trip going to Fort Morgan from IL, arriving on Saturday Sept. 21 (spending Friday night somewhere along the way? )

Thanks, again!

The ferry is a great idea and will save you lots of time. The thing about the ferry is that you need to be in line early because it fills up fast and can be a long wait for the next one. So as long as you keep that in mind it is all good. I would allow an hour to be safe. You can walk around once your car is in line. There are facilities available and the battery for Ft. Morgan is nearly just across the street. When you cross to Dauphin Island there is Ft. Gaines and the Dauphin Island Sea Lab just beside the ferry port. Another feature of Dauphin Island is the shell mounds that were created by native Americans local to the island.

I would check with the ferry to see if two ferry's will be running. If not, then please be there early enough so your not pushed for time. You may see dolphin swimming beside you on the way over.

Thanks for all of the help!

We will check the ferry schedule for the times...and plan accordingly. Not only will taking the ferry to New Orleans save us some time (hopefully), it will be another new experience for 2 retirees!

Can't wait to expand our horizons!

And check the weather as the ferry doesn't run in rough weather
