good place for mom/teen daughter trip who like nature?

looking at travel late march 2013. Never been to alabama. wondering if this is a good option for us. Not looking for just beach time, but hiking or biking and enjoying nature too.

Alabama is a beautiful state with lots of nature. The best hiking is in the North section of the state where there are several established trails and more dramatic scenery than in the southern half of the state. One of the nicer areas is the waterfall line which splits Alabama in half and is the most southern line of waterfalls in the US. North Alabama is also the bouldering capital and caving capital of the US. There is a lot to see in the southern half of the state too. There are several state parks located in the lower half of the state, all with different scenery. Alabama is over 90 percent forest. I particularly like the mobile delta and the beach though. We have several trails in GS/OB for hiking and biking. The Bartram trail which is a birding trail runs just north of us also. There are many small towns and villages as well that offer great chances to see some of the south. Fairhope,Al. and Milton, Fl. are both nice and have walkable scenic downtowns. Enjoy your vacation!

Gulf Shores can't be beat for getting into nature along the gulf coast. You have both Gulf State Park and the Bon Secour Federal Wildlife Preserve within the city limits.

Gulf State Park has miles and miles of beautiful paved walking and biking paths that take you through the natural wetlands that connect Gulf Shores to Orange Beach. These are called the Back Country Trails and are public access and free. There are 6 separate trail heads at which you can park and several places to rent bikes.

Bon Secour is out in the Fort Morgan area of Gulf Shores and has 4 separate hiking trails from 1 to 4 miles in length. These are among the best coastal hiking trails I have ever seen. They take you through subtropical forests, around both salt water lagoons and fresh water lakes, and over to undisturbed federally protected beaches.

Out a bit further is the Fort Morgan State Park where you can tour the historic civil war fort on the end of the peninsula. Take the ferry over to Dauphin Island to see Fort Gaines or the Sea Lab or travel on to visit Belingrath Gardens, one of the most impressive gardens in North America.

The Weeks Bay Preserve is also not far away from Gulf Shores and is home to the famous Pitcher Plants. Well worth a visit.
