Kayaking in the gulf

Its been a few years since we were last in the gulf shores area. Is a kayak manageable for younger kids (10-15). We kayaked in the St. Pete's area a couple years ago and it was so windy that it was difficult. We are considering renting them for the week we are there end of July.

We were there a few weeks ago and rented kayaks to use in the bay area and it was really windy, so really hard (at least for me) and not much fun. Didn't even attempt in the gulf (the red flags were out though). We did go to the Bon Secour River one day and rented kayaks from www.beachnriverkayakrentals.com and it was perfect! The river was calm, quiet and beautiful until you got out to the wide part of the river, then it was less calm (but still nothing like the bay was) and still beautiful. We went almost to the bay, then turned around and went back....thereby ending with the nice calm river. A lot of people see dolphins, but alas...not meant to be for us that day (but we will be back next time we are in the area).

The folks at beachnriver are excellent hosts!

You can rent kayaks at the Dive Shop, right on 59 and then kayak in the lagoon and into the back waters. Or take them over to Lake Shelby which will also be calmer.

This past week (especially early in the week) the gulf was pretty calm, little wind so your children probably could manage the kayaks. But the wind and weather can change from day to day and morning to afternoon in ways that would make it hard to kayak in either the lagoon or gulf.

There are kayak rentals available right on beach, just west of Windmill Ridge Rd. if you want to wait to see if the weather is right for your family.
