Things to do while visiting Gulf Shores

Below I have listed some things do do and see while visitiing the Gulf Shores area. Some of these things are not actually located at the gulf but you can make a good day trip out of them.

Waterville, USA offers a water park and an amusement park. However, its main operation is during the summer. Check out thier web page to find out more information:

You can go to Fort Morgan (very close). Operation Schedule: Fort open Nov. 1–Mar. 31 8–5, Apr. 1–Oct. 31 8–7; museum year-round 9–5.

Construction began 1819, completed 1834. Large brick fort serviced the Civil War, Spanish-American War and both world wars. It played a major role during the Battle of Mobile Bay (1864). Museum details fort's history.

Then after viewing the Fort jump on the ferry. (walk on or drive on: best to take care to tour other areas of the island) and head to Dauphin Island. Here is the ferry schedule:

While on Dauphin Island you can visit the aquariam,

or visit the other places that dauphin Island has to offer.

If that don't suit your fancy here are some more ideas for a day trip and/or over night.

Art Museum - http://www.mobilemuseumofart.com/home.html

Exploreum (great for kids and adults) offers IMAX theater and much more. http://www.exploreum.net/

Visit the USS ALABAMA - For history lovers this is a must. You tour the USS ALABAMA battleship, the submarine and also get to enjoy the aviation museum.

Historic Homes - http://www.historicmobile.org/oakleigh.html

State Park -Here you can go fishing, stay in a cabin (CHEAPER than hotels or condos) or even camp.

Fort Conde and the Pheniox Fire house Museum - (located in downtown Mobile)

Church Street Graveyard - Grave of Joe Cain - below are two links to learn the history before visiting

I hope this helps anyone who is coming to the coast. I will be posting restraunts soon.

Happy Traveling!!!

We'll be there in August for a family reunion at Gulf Shores Plantation. Do you know of any bus tours that might be worthwhile for a group of 71? Half the group are kids.

Also, can you recommend places to cater meals for us? Or do you know of places that can accomodate a group of 71? We find dropping in on restaurants doesn't work so well. :)

Our family (with boys ages 9 and 11) is flying in from San Diego, and we thought we might extend the trip past this week to some other areas of the south. Do you have recommendations on places to see within a days' drive from Gulf Shores? We'd like to show them the Mississippi River, and wondered whether there are any short paddlewheel excursions that would be fun. Any other recommendations to give us a flavor of the south?

We will be at the Gulf Shores Plantation in June. Looking forward to seeing your restaurant list. Have you ever eaten at the 'Round Back on Fort Morgan Road? Someone told me it had really good food and a layed back atmosphere - Mom & Pop owned.

I agree with visiting Fort Morgan - we have been several times. Very interesting.

Thank you SO much. We are going to be in the area the last week of April. I've printed this off as it will be a big help.
