17 days in South India. Starting from Chennai.

Hi, we will land in Chennai the 21th December and leave the 8th January.

Anyone can give us some advice on what tour to make? We have already done the norh India and we appreciated the whole but Delhi, so this time we would like to avoid big crowded cities. Nevertheless we heard about Chennai music&dance festival. Is it that good ? :)

thanks for your help!

You can consider doing Chennai Pondicherry Mahabalipuram with an overnight stay at Mahabalipuram and return to Chennai to do an overnight train journey to Madurai. From Madural you can visit Tanjore Kumbakonam and Trichy, taking a train back from Trichy. The other option would be to go to Munnar Thekaddy Kochi by car and take a flight from Kochi to Chennai.

6. Re: 17 days in South India. Starting from Chennai.

I'm planning to see several temples and pondicherry from base at Fisherman's Cove (4 days). Then should I drive or fly to Trichy? I thought it was a beautiful drive but one person told me it's very ugly now, new concrete buildings along bumpy roads and so I should fly. Your opinion?

Does this itinerary make sense? Any tips?

Mon 28 Jan Mahabalipuram/Trichy/Tanjore Flight to Trichy

Tue 29 Jan Tanjore Tanjore and surroundings

Wed 30 Jan Tanjore/Madurai by road

Thu 31 Jan Madurai Meenakshi Temple

Fri 1 Feb by road

Sat 2 Feb Marari by road backwaters

Sun 3 Feb on the beach

Mon 4 Feb Marari/Cochin by road: is this beautiful trip or should we take train or bus if there is one?

Tue 5 Feb Cochin visit of the synagogues, north of Cochin

Wed 6 Feb Cochin visit of the city and of the synagogue

Thu 7 Feb Cochin/Bombay/Aurangabad Flight Flight

Fri 8 Feb Aurangabad Ellora

Sat 9 Feb Aurangabad Ajanta

Fisherman's Cove is a nice secluded resort but not sure if it would be the ideal base for exploring the area around. From Pondicherry you would be better off continuing to Karailakal,Kumbakonam,Tanjore,Trichy but perhaps you could spend the night at Pondicherry to cut the travel time a bit. From Trichy you can drive to Madural via Dindigul and continue via Theni to Munnar and onto Kochi.
