Buying jewellery in Jaipur - a cautionary note

Be careful when considering buying jewellery in Jaipur that purports to contain gem stones.

Asking prices could be 3 or 4 times greater than they should be. Though I appreciate that a profit needs to be made, I discovered when I returned home that I had paid way too much for a ring I bought when visiting in January 2013.

The ring was valued on my return to the UK and I was told that the diamond stones contained only 0.32 parts (out of 1000 parts) diamonds, that the 'sapphires' appeared to be imitations and that both the asking price and what I eventually paid were way too high. The jeweller in Jaipur was made aware of these findings. He disagrees with them. He has offered a refund if I return the ring but postage of jewellery to India is not cheap and there are uncertainties as to whether it would ever reach its destination or that I would ever get my refund.

I bought the ring for my own pleasure - not with intent on making a profit for myself by selling it on - and I will enjoy wearing it even though it appears not to be the promised product. But being ripped off leaves a nasty taste..........

If you would like further details of my experience please message me.

There have been a lot of warnings about jewellery scams in Jaipur, what is the name of the shop, you need to post it to warn others.

It was Jewels 'N' Arts, opposite Ayurved College, Samod Haveli Way, Zorawar Singh Gate, Amber Road.

Even if the ring had contained real sapphires it was way, way, overpriced. Now, having been told the blue stones are imitations, I feel very angry about it.

Hi..I also want to add a line that never buy a Jewellery specially gems and stones until and unless you have better knowledge of it..if one can judge the quality then and only then buy..

As I visited so many times to jaipur but never bought gems..it looks so pleasant but I scare to buy as I don't have perfect knowledge..and most of the shops never refunds you if you return or demand replacement

I just returned from India with a purchase of a sapphire ring and an aquamarine ring. I just returned from my jewellers GIA certified appraiser and was advised that I was taken advantage of by over $2000!!! Be advised that the store where I made the purchase was purportedly of the highest ethics with a store in Beverly Hills. I was escorted to this store by a tour guide from Rajasthan area & worked for a very well known American travel agency. I am very disappointed and feel very ripped off. I advise no purchase of jewelry overseas as quoted from my appraiser.
