Do I need Visa for international > domestic Mumbai Airport?

Hi, I have a ticket from London to Mumbai International next month, and I want to buy a flight to Bangkok for a few hours later. However, the affordable flights leave from Mumbai's domestic terminal.

So, do I need a visa or transit visa? Or are these terminals connected internally? I hear there is a bus, but is it possible to use without a transit visa?

I bought the return in India when i was there in December, which is why I am returning....my original visa has expired.

Your assistance will be most appreciated!

You are mistaken. All international flights leave from the international airport itself.

Thanks for the reply, but I need a low cost flight, and they seem to leave from the domestic terminal, changing at Delhi for onward connections. Eg. Indigo. Any ideas?

CraigPerson if you do arrive at International and leave from Domestic terminal you will need a transit visa. If you arrive and depart from International and stay in the area reserved for transit passengers you will not need a transit visa. Something to think about when booking your flight.

Also the timing for transit visa is crucial. It is only valid for 15 days from date of issue. Also I don't know what happens if you return via India.

There seems to be a gap here. If the OP is looking at arriving in Mumbai and departing from Delhi or Kolkata , travelling there by a domestic flight, he needs a visa.

Craigperson,

If you are looking at arriving in Mumbai and departing to Bangkok from any other airport, say Delhi or Kolkata, there can only be two scenarios..

1) You have a direct booking to BKK and in India, it is handled by code share flights, then you may not need a visa. But, this case needs to be looked at the transit timings and other details.

2) If you are planning a multiple booking, like your place of origin to Mumbai, then Mumbai to the outgoing location in India, and finally the outgoing destination from India to Bangkok, you would definitely require a visa for India.

5. Re: Do I need Visa for international > domestic Mumbai Airport?

Hi bvsprasanna, many thanks for your advice. I already have a Turkish Airlines flight to Mumbai from London, and intend to book a flight from Mumbai to BKK. However, the cheapest option would be to get a flight to BKK that originates from the domestic terminal, a plane change takes place at Delhi (for example) and goes on to BKK.

I believe I will simply have to buy a flight from the International terminal, thus avoiding getting a visa. I assume the fact it is another airline will not matter? Thus, if I have ticket to BOM with Turkish, and an onward ticket to BKK with Bangkok Airways (for example), I will not need a visa of any kind?

I will only have hand luggage.

You've been most helpful, many thanks, CraigPerson.

Hello CraigPerson,

You will need a transit visa if you change over to International to Domestic terminal even internally by coach. There are several flights from Mumbai- Kolkata- Bangkok on code sharing basis such as Jet-lite &Jet Konnect, Indigo and others and so you need to have a transfer from International to Domestic to take this better priced flights but will need transit visa.

You can go through the post 5 at this link and the letter from VFS U.K on behalf of High Commission of India is very clear the link is here:

tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g304554-i4228-k378…

So either take a better price flight and get transit visa or take a flight which takes from International airport the same as you arrive in from U.K.sans any visa.

The option you have already planned to in post #5 above.

Igirl... See the above post, as I suspected... You are not going mad, but the post was a little complicated...

@CraigPerson...

It is not as simple as you consider. Your journey, what you are planning is of two legs. As long as you can manage to book the Turkish flight direct, for example, London - Bombay - Delhi - Anywhere - Bangkok, and subject to the ticketing being on the same PNR and the transit times are in accordance with the limitations in visa rules, you do not require a visa.

But, in this case, you are trying London - Bombay in Turkish and are on your own from there on. Hence, you may avoid a visa, if you plan an onward from Mumbai to Bangkok, again subject to visa norms.

There is also another way you can consider, where you book a flight out of Mumbai to Bangkok, even an interconnecting flight from Delhi or elsewhere, but within the permissible timings. Here you need to alert both the Turkish and the onward airline of your possible transit, where the onward airline toes you from the incoming (Turkish) airline and escorts you to their outgoing. They would undertake the responsibility of transferring your checked in baggage and you just need to verify it. Subject to this arrangement being with visa non requirement norms, you might pass off.

Hence, we can suggest the exact methodology, if you can write out the exact timings and the proposed flights.

Regards

Prasanna

Craigperson,

My apologies I got you wrong, I assumed you were taking a direct flight from Mumbai to Bangkok.

Hello bvPrassana,

CraigPerson, is intending to take a flight from Mumbai to Bangkok (there are few code sharing flights which operates Mum-Delhi-Bangkok, Mum-Kolkata-Bangkok and it flies out of Mumbai Domestic Airport) and he arrives from U.K.at International airport. So will need a transit visa for sure.

Hello Sandy ,

It is sometimes better to Google and be sure than to go on assumption and take someone wrong.

Good you realised and corrected.
