Delhi hotel

I am looking for a hotel for our family of 4. Somewhere close to the train station will be good to make it easier to take the early morning train to Agra.

Since we will be arriving in a early morning flight from US (on Mon) and leaving for Agra (Tuesday morning), I expect we have to book for 2 nights (Monday and Tuesday).

Someone suggested Connaught place. Is this a good area to stay? Any recommendations for hotels?

Any recommendatiosn for car companies?

This is a minefield you have ventured into. While you can expect help from the Delhi DE's and regular posters like K_Yogi, be careful about "recommendations" for Tara Palace, Hotel Ajanta etc. Browse through the earlier posts in the Delhi forum and you will know what I mean.

I personally think you should be looking at Karol Bagh for Hotels. I stay there myself. If its near the train station you want, Hotel Ginger is your best option.

Hi vacai,

I have seen your other post on the Jaipur thread where you sought recommendations for 3-4 star hotels. If you are looking for the same here then Hans Plaza at Connaught Place should suit you !

Connaught Place, is the centre of Delhi, offers ease of travel to anywhere in Delhi and has many good restaurants. It's just 10 minutes taxi drive from the New Delhi Railway Station.

In budget category Ginger is fine. But Ginger has no room service and no restaurant of it's own. The Comesum restaurant, serves oily & spicy version of Indian foods, for good dining options the nearest area is again Connaught Place.

Reagrding the booking for 2 days, can you tell us when is your flight landing or at what time are you expecting to check in ?

If you have one day and wish to see in Delhi, then you should not miss Red Fort, Qutub Minar Complex, Hauz Khas Area and Humayun's tombs (the architectural inspiration for Taj Mahal).

Thank you all. I did not realize that this was a minefield question. I have relied on TA extensively for many of travels and was hoping for the same with India. Thanks for the warning.

Thanks, Maya, for the sightseeing recommendations. I will be arriving in an early morning flight (I think 7 am or so) in Delhi. We will be tired and so we will take a few hours rest and then go around Delhi. I believe Red fort is closed on Monday, Alas. In my shortlist was Qutab Minar, Jama Masgid, Red Fort (which i can't do now) and Birla Temple. I have a childood memory of this temple and so thought it will be a good one to show my kids. I did not have Humayun's tomb but will add it. Is it possible to do all this in a day or should I remove one or more of this? Which ones should I remove?

I am also hoping for a couple of hours of shopping in Connaught place (based on the TA forum). Instead should I do Sarojini market?

I will be leaving for Agra in the 6:30 train the next morning (Tuesday)

Hi vacai,so firing of Ballistic Missiles(nuclear tiped) on this forum yet to begin may be all quite before firing starts----- Ginger is managed by a big group and they have a reputation of there own and close to railway station. See if you can find a place over there.

Departure time for Shatabdi from Delhi is 0615AM and not at 0630 AM.See that you are at railway station atleast 30 mts. before train,s schedule departure. The time you may need to look for the plateform and your compartment.

If you can find time you can visit Akshardham temple also a new but beautifully built temple.

walteruk, the newest tout on the block is lraedy in the firing mode..... Probably the big bang firing will start after my post ! However, as always, I am ready to thwart evil designs of all the touts. one has gone on long leave and chamchas are posting farewell messages, I'll ensure that rest also pack their bags......

As brave1 and Deepakji has already said, Ginger is good choice, particularly for early morning trains. Beware of few spammers, who are out to promote their hotels/tours. You can understand them from their Language skills. They write pathetic English.

Stop all of you!!!

I have used TA for many other countries (some much poorer economically than India), but never have I encountered such bickering amongst the locals. I have had excellent impression of the people of that country and DEs. I have relied on them enough to wire thousands of $$ to make my bookings. Not so with India yet.

A piece of advice: if you are not a tout, then you can serve the people well by offering suggestions and options. You will come across as well-informed and respectful. The touts will eventually be weeded out. However, if you continue to police the tout and point them out in your emails rather than responding to the queries then there is essentially a match going on amongst you and nobody wins. The end result is that readers get a bad impression about all of you.

Thanks to all who have porovided sincere responses.
