rental car and hotel question

Are there safe places to leave a rental car in Almirante if lodging is on an island? We plan to be in the area in a couple of weeks but we do not have lodging arranged yet, but wondering if we need to limit our options to Almirante b/c we'll have a rental car.

Any suggestions for budget/mid-range, locally owned hotels that are family friendly (3 kids 12 and under)?

There is a gated parking lot in Almirante next to the water taxi. It seems fairly safe but I have no experience leaving the car over there.

Ate you asking about lodging in Almirante??

It is not a place to stay, at all. All though, in a pinch, there is a new hotel that looks OK. I forget what it's called but it has the Chinese restaurant La Fortuna. Parking your car is easy. There is the lot the previous person posted about and the bombers as well.

If you stay in Bocas you may ferry your car from Almirante to Bocas town. There are two ferries operating (Baltija and Palanga) between Almirante and Isla Colon and the trip takes less than 2 hours.

The name of the hotel in Almirante mentioned by geojack is La Preferida, but I guess every taxi driver knows where the restaurant La Fortuna is.

Park your car in Almirante - dont need to bring it on the islands - take one of the two water taxis (they leave every 30 minutes (6:00am-630pm) from Almirante to Isla Colon (main Bocas island) - lots of lodging options - check out this site or vrbo.com for rental homes.

Thank you all so much for your quick and informative responses. Much appreciated!! Knowing there's a place we can leave our car in Almirante helps us a lot - now we know that we don't need to limit our lodging search to Almirante.

How safe is it to leave a car in Almirante?

And would we need to remove all our belongings?

SandiCtravels - you are going to lock your car up behind a gated and barbed wired facility. We have left cars there and have had no problems. I wouldn't leave any valuables visible however.

Confirming that the gated parking lot next to the water taxi worked out great for us. We left our vehicle there for 3 days last week ($5.00/day) and had no problems whatsoever - we did not leave any valuables visible.
