Perahera

We will be in Kandy Aug 9th and 10th (last two nights). Does it really matter which night we go ? will the procession on he 10th be much better ? if not, we would rather watch on the 9th and get out of town.

Perahera means cruelty against elephants. Elephants are kept hungry all day before Perahera duty so that they do not defecate on the street during the parade. Most of the elephants have injury marks on their legs due to the chains tied to them. When not in the parade, elephants work as beasts of burden. They get transported in trucks from one temple to another. Information on the prevalent cruelty to Perahera elephants is all over the internet. People need to stop watching Perahera to stop this cruelty.
