Hi There,

If its purely for kids and only for Elephants ? Then of course Pinnawala will do as you will have spend minimum 3 hours in Minnariya.

Thanks Carol. My understanding is that major attraction in Minneriya is anyways just elephants. Are there many other animals that one can see there especially in Dec month?

Hi there,

Well they're the main large animal there yes. Lots of smaller / less impressive ones also, like herds of (spotted) deer, wild boars, and crocodiles and land/water monitors - the latter as impressive as crocs, like huge Komodo dragons.

All the best,

I would say it depends on the age of your children. At Minneriya they get a chance to go around on a jeep and see elephants out in the wild. Its great fun for kids. When we went we saw loads of monkeys too. Our jeep got stuck in mud... as you cross small streams .... great experience for kids. Pinnawela is probably better if your children are very young as this is a calmer trip. Viewing the elephants take their daily bathe in the river is lovely for kids.

Pinnawala is a "zoo" (its a touristic place now, not the "orphanage" it used to be)

While Minneriya is a National Park, where you go to see Elephants in their natural habitat, you do a jeep safari and drive around and see herds of elephants roaming free in the wild.

BUT kids will have more fun in Pinnawala, they can feed the baby elephants, take pictures see them bathing in the river etc

We visited with 2 kids 5 and 8, who loved the jeep Safai to Kaudulla National park ( next to Minneriya) and saw over a hundred wild elephants at close quarters and also drinking and bathing in the lake. Pinnawala was on our itinary for the kids had we not seen any elephants so gave that a miss. Other than close contact ( for additional cost), nothing beats seeing a heard of wild animal in their natural environment.

If I can be allowed to but in; we are planning to trip in June. So far, Minneriya was not on the map. The first two nights are planned in Dambulla or Sigiriya, and if the next two in Kandy, and so on. Seeing what is written here about Minneriya make it sound an attractive option for elephant viewing.

So, would Minneriya be a good option in June?

If yes, how much time should be set aside for the trip?

Where would be a central place to stay two nights, if we were to visit all three places?

Thank.

Safaris are 6-9 am and 3-6 pm. Dambulla/Sigiriya/Habarana are all centrally located.

Once Again, thank you Hans.

We land around 11 at night, and we're planning to drive direct to Dambulla. We are told that it is a four hour drive at that time. Would thst be correct? And are two nights ok for all the three places,

Thanks once again.
