We are currently staying in a beautiful place, high up in the hills, in Kandy, in the home of Kumari and Rihal Manugalle. Even though it is only a 5 minute drive up into the hills, we feel as though we are miles away from the noise and chaos of modern-day Kandy. We wake up to lush green folliage, birds warbling, and the most spectacular views of the hills and countryside around Kandy. In the mornings, the sun rises, melting the morning haze and in the evenings we witness from the spacious sunroom that joins our large bedroom, outstanding sunsets. In the distance, we see the large Buddha that stands guard over all of Kandy. This is truly Kandy at its best! We feel very lucky to have discovered this residence (I'm not sure whether to call it a B&B or a "home-stay") as we were getting very discouraged by some of the choices of accomodations. We were referred to Manugalle's by others who were very happy to tell us about their stay and about the delicious food provided by the Manugalle's cook. Their house is in a residential area and is thus very quiet and tranquil, apart from the sounds of nature that encompass the area. The room, itself, is upstairs and private. It is actually a "suite," consisting of a large bedroom, a glassed-in sitting room that opens to the views, and a bathroom (with hot water and shower.) This is not a luxury accomodation; it is rather simply furnished, but very clean. It is also the most reasonable accomodation we have seen in all of Sri Lanka (value for money) at less than $15 per day for two, including breakfast (real coffee, too!) We have seen much inferior accomodations for twice the price. But the best feature about staying in this lovely family home (furnished with antiques) is the family itself! The Manugalles are an old Kandy family, well-known and well-respected. They are both very interesting, intelligent, cultured and refined; and speak English very well. They are a wealth of knowledge about all aspects of Sri Lanka. In addition to providing very comfortable and resaonable accomodations, they also can provide the following: wonderful dinners (also at a very reasonable price,) guided tours in either a passenger car or van for larger groups, car and driver, trekking and nature tours, Ayurvedic treatment and massages, Sri Lankan cooking lessons, and even laundry services if needed. We will stay with the Manugalles for almost a week, and I am enthusiastic about passing along this recommendation to fellow travelers. You can contact them at email@example.com or call them at 0777-811156 (cellular) or 081-218749 (residence.)
They will pick you up at your point of arrival in Kandy. The Manugalle's are decent, honest people and will provide their guests a very warm and welcoming experience.
