Kandy Restaurants

We are staying a week in Kandy to watch the cricket. We just have bed and breakfast at our hotel. Can anyone recommend restaurants to eat in the evening. We may need to book as I think Kandy will be pretty busy then!

Hi Madeleine,

Hmmm... restaurants separate from hotels on tourist level are hard to find. One where we regularly eat is not really tourist level but fair priced and good enough: Devon rest. in main street (near the market and the bakery/banks). Reservations impossible there.

For the rest it's mainly hotel restaurants. More or less near city centre you have e.g. Queens (an independent Chinese restaurant now, I think), Thilanka, Suisse and Hilltop.

But others no doubt have found some other tourist-worthy restaurants in town!

All the best,

Hi

Don't mind if the restaurants are in the hotels, just wanted to know some good places to eat.

Okay then!

Can confirm that Suisse, Thilanka and Hilltop all have decent restaurants because we dined when we stayed there. Mostly a-la-carte during weekdays and buffets (as an extra option) on peakdays, like weekend and cricket.

And an extra option which I did not yet mention but which is worth a try: Helga's Folly hotel restaurant. Not more special cuisine than the others but also close to the lake (tukruk ride needed from main town, 5-10 mins) and a VERY special building. Old colonial villa transformed into an art-deco living museum, restaurant also very curious. Ourselves we went half mad when sleeping there due to the overwhelming art-style, but family (art fans) absolutely loved the place...

Have fun again,

Hi,

'Flower song' is a very good Chinese restaurant. But they serve steaks and sea food as well. I do not know the name of the street. When you come down the street from the clock tower towards Queens hotel, you must turn left in front of the Cargill's food city. It's at the bottom of that street. 'Avanhala' on the road around the lake next to Kandyan arts center is also a good choice for Sri Lankan food but no alcohol.

regards,

Frank.
