Hikka in Oct/Nov - advice please

Can anyone help with advice on when ‘the season’ starts in Hikka area? I’ve recently been told that it will be pretty dead until December, I know it’s peak season from December, but I thought end October / Nov everything would be opening up but it wouldn’t be too busy….I’m planning on coming end of Oct – mid November but would not want to come then if most of the bars/restaurants/guest houses aren’t open. I was in Hikka end of last march, and really liked it at that time as it was end of the season so really chilled, but still everywhere was open. I thought that beginning of Nov would be similar to March – am I completely wrong?!

Also, will it be safe to swim in the sea during this period. For me, much of the holiday is about relaxing at the cafes and being in & out of the sea – is this possible at this time of year?

Advice appreciated!

Many thanks

Behind the reef, roughly opposite the Coral * named hotels, swimming is generally safe year round.

although not swimmable, we found plenty of activity around Hikkaduwa/Unawatuna area last year in October.

"much of the holiday is about relaxing at the cafes and being in & out of the sea – is this possible at this time of year?"

you have a better chance of safer sea around Hikkaduwa and Unawatuna thanks to the reef (less waves) but if you are planning a beach holiday, then its very bad timing :(
