Day trips from Ouarzazate?

Hi,

Is Ouarzazate worth a visit?

What are some of the recommended day trips from Ouarzazate?

Is it better to hire a guide for the side trips? If so, going through

the hotel or a tour agency?

I have seen a post on the same subject but it is not very clear

and kind of cursory. For example, it talks about Rose Valley

that I cannot even find in my travel book.

Here is a link to a company which specializes in trips around Ouarzazate. I know the area very well, and it does detail all the possibilites on offer. At least it will give you some idea of what is on offer. (I must stress again that I have no connection with this company - I just thought their website was very professional and informative). There are many other tour/excursion operators in the area.

The Valley of the Roses is to the north of El Kelaa M'Gouna which is about 85km to the east of O'zate. Also in that area and a bit further east are the Dades and Todra Groges.

If you are into history (Glaoui family and Lords of the Atlas) the Telouet Kasbah is worth a visit as it is currently being renovated. This is to the north of Ait Benhaddou.

Thanks Zohor for the links. I will read them. Since you said you

are familiar with the area, how are thehotels/medical facilities in

Ouarzazate?

Tim, Thanks for the locations.

we have appreciation of culture and history so I will check these out.

Is there a different name for Valley of the Roses? What do I need

to look under in travel books. I have Fodor's and Lonely Planet

and cannot find that,

There is a wide selection of hotels in Ouarzazate, from super luxe to backpacker style lodgings - the choice is yours, according to your budget.

As far as hospitals are concerned: yes, there are a couple of very basic hospitals in Ouarzazate. The best hospitals and clinics in Morocco are in Rabat and Casablanca, with Marrakech catching up fast. There are many good doctors and specialists in Morocco, most of them having done a lot of their training in France or Spain. However, the hospitals in many rural towns can still only be described as basic but adequate for first aid. For anything more specialised you are looking at Rabat/Casa.

Please ensure that you have adequate insurance for your trip, preferably including access to an air ambulance service should the need arise.

We have been in Morocco for New Year. After one week in Marrakesh we have decided to go to Sahara. Already from Europe we have found through Internet several agencies which are organizing trips throughout the country and have chosen Ouarzazate Unlimited see http://www.ouarzazate-unlimited.com/ because they have been extremely professional and flexible trying to accommodate our needs. They have organized a 3 day trip with a 4x4 Toyota through Ait Benhaddou crossing High Atlas Mountains. After we have spent a night in Ouarzazate we have visited Todgha gorges, have traveled to Erg Chebbi where we have spent the night under tents in a desert camp inside the big dunes of Erg Chebbi Merzouga. The 3rd day we have driven all way to Fes but with may stops on the way. From Fes we have traveled to Casablanca via Valoubillis and Meknes.

We are impressed with the landscape and with all we have seen. The kasbah, Rose valley, movie setting and the studios in Ouarzazate, the dunes, the canyons, the cedars, the small town of Isfan where you have the impression to be in the Swiss Alps, besides of course Marrakesh and Fes have made our vacation so special. The Ouarzazate Unlimited, Hasna, Jamal and Jawad have organized our trip in a way that we had nothing to think about. Everything was perfect and so well planned that no European agency could do better. Jamal who was our driver, guide and guardian has shown us places we have not expected to see and has amused us and especially our 10 year old son with some exciting off the road drive. The only black dot in our trip was a guide in Fes (Hamid), who spoiled our first day in Fes by taking us to friends shops. After he realised that we were not willing to buy anything at outrageous prices (we came from a week in Marrakesh so we knew what the prices were), he become extremely unpleasant and impolite. Except him, all the other guides we had were excellent.

The car was in a very good condition, the accommodations in this trip were very good (except the cold in Sahara where we have slept in very basic tents- I recommend going there when the temperature gets a bit higher).

I must reccomed also our driver Mustafa in Marrakesh, riad Heroughi in Marrakesh and riad al Amine in Fes. For these I will write a special review.

The private hospital in Ouarzazate, Chiva, is quite up to standard and can also do more advanced stuff; much better than the govt hospital. Can tell from experience, after an unfortunate fall on a wadi bank they gave the best possible care and surgery-under-anesthaesis.

All the best,

<Erik> & [Sandya]

Hi

As to your question where the rose valley is situated, it is about 2 hours from Ouarzazate on the road to Kelaa M'Gouna, which celebrates the rose festival next weekend starting tomorrow until Sunday. Right now the roses are in full bloom and are harvested for the famous rose products.

Tim and the others already mentioned many sight seeing highlights, more to mention are the small beautiful Fint oasis, only 20 minutes off-road from Ouarzazate or the Kasbah Amridil, which is approx. 45 minutes from Ouarzazate in direction Kelaa M'Gouna.

Enjoy your trip and don't hesitate to contact me for more information.
