stay in boulmane du dades/ dades area or reach Merzouga?

Hi,

I am going on a trip to the marrakesh area with my family in mid march.

The second half of the trip we will be in the city of marrakesh itself and go on day trips.

for the first half (7 days), we want a nature and cultural trip.

we contacted tour agencies which suggested we start in the imlil area, and the go to dades gorge then todra gorge, erg chebbi, draa valley. (about half a day in dades and half a day in todra)

We have a 13 month old baby with us, and I am not exactly sure what there is in erg chebbi that makes it worth the trip.

We have repeatedly seen the Israeli, arizona and jordanian deserts on previous trips, and ridden on camels. In any case will obviously not do camels/ sand skiing ect.

Are we better off seeing erg chebbi or staying and doing more of the gorges ?

we will be in a private tour with extended family only.

thanks a lot,

yael

Erg Chebbi is a relatively small area of sand (25km x 7km) that you probably won't be impressed with given your experience elsewhere, and is most definitely not the Sahara desert as most would have you believe, so yes, I would spend longer in the gorges.

Depending on weather conditions and your tour company's 4x4 expertise, you could travel up the Dades to Imilchil, then down the Todra. Some photos of that route—Lower Dades: morocco-knowledgebase.net/forum/… , Upper Dades: morocco-knowledgebase.net/forum/… and Todra Gorge: morocco-knowledgebase.net/forum/…

There are some lovely hotels in the gorges, for example, http://en.kasbah-vallee-dades.com/

Also Kasbah Itran at El Kelaa M'Gouna: http://www.kasbahitran.com/ and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tJ69HeI1DV0

Agreed. If you have experienced the desert in the Kingdom of Jordan (as I have) then Erg Chebbi is a mere litter tray (kitty box).

I fully agree with the two posts above. Tim's YouTube clip of Kasbah Itran is of my favourite small hotel in Morocco, and I would strongly recommend it to you. I have sometimes stayed there when I have wanted to do nothing at all; sometimes at the start or finish of a trek in Jebel Sahro; at other times as a springboard for casual trips up the Assif Mgoun (the Valley of the Roses), much of which can be explored from the piste. What's more, the hotel is run by a team of really lovely people.

Even if you "repeatedly seen the Israeli, arizona and jordanian deserts on previous trips" it can be interesting to compare it with Erg Chebbi, though it is not in deep Sahara of course but it is very nice there. And it make me actually sorry that other valued down this piece of the desert.

And if you have 7 days over so why not to see it, anyway you cannot stay the whole week in Todra Gorge and Dades and there around. So why not to take a couple of days and go to Erg Chebbi?
