erg chebbi camel trek reservations needed?

hi all,

we'll be traveling through morocco for about 3 weeks later this month, and wanted to know if it was necessary to make reservations for a camel trek in erg chebbi. we'll be working our way through the country from casablanca up to tangier, down to fes, erg chebbi, marrakech, western sahara, and back north...we expect to be getting into merzouga around the 17th/18th of nov.

our plan was to just show up in merzouga and try and arrange something there that included camel trek/night in berber tent w meals/return following morning....

do you think it would be feasible to do that? or make a reservation in fez or something? lastly, how much can we expect to pay for the camel trek...we are on a pretty tight budget

if you guys think of anything else important to do that would require advance reservations, please let me know as well.

many thanks in advance for all the helpful advice/suggestions

Hi gothamcity!

We booked our Erg Chebbi, overnight camel trek in advance, via email to Kasbah Mohayut. We also stayed a night to relax in the actual "kasbah" in a room. We wanted to be sure that we had a reputable guide & camp as opposed to "winging it", and we were pleased with our choice in the end.

I believe the camel trek & camp was 35Euro each/night; Dinner & breakfast incl.

There are quite a few hotels/guides in the area, with signs right off the road, so I'm confident that you could book on the spot, but for pure piece of mind, we prebooked.

Have a great trip!

You dont need a reservation -- there are ample companies in and around Merzouga that can take you into the dunes. Pretty much any hotel or auberge will do it.
