Turtle Island Safe

Like some similar posts my question is about safety. My partner and I are going to Sumatra and Borneo in Jan and Feb 2014 and I have been reading about the heightened warning on the coast of Sabah by Australian Smart traveller. We were planning on going to Sandakan, Kinabatangan River and Turtle Island. I am mostly concerned about turtle island, I had heard that it was very close to the Philippines. Should we just give it a miss and spend some more time somewhere else? Or does anyone know anywhere else to see turtles in Sumatra, Or Malaysia?

Thanks in advance :)

Hi Jessie0172,

Turtle Island/Selingan indeed is very close to Philippines, there are a number of turtles islands around the same area, a couple actually belongs to Philippines.

Regards of safety, to be very honest, as a local, we too fear of it. No one can say for sure whether it is 100% unsafe, but also, no one can say for sure that it is 100% safe.

Since there is a recent kidnap happen recently in Pom Pom Island, i would say, try avoiding island resort around Semporna or Sandakan at the moment. But then again, it is very much on your own decision.

Thank you very much for your honest opinion. I think we will give it a miss and hopefully come back at another time when it is safer. Would Sandakan still be safe or should i give that a miss too? I was hoping to go to the War memorial and Sun Bear conservation centre before heading down to the kinabatangan river.

I went to Selingan Island last June when there was a do not travel order (naughty me). There were absolutely no problems. There is also a police post on the Island which helps with security.

Sandakan is safe and worth visiting for the things you mentioned. You might also want to look at visiting the Labuk Bay proboscis monkey sanctuary. .
