Hi

We recently stayed at the Barefoot Sukau Lodge and had a most wonderful time there. The rooms are basic and clean but the environment was simply the best to say the least. The lodge was located at one end of the village of Sukau and during your free time you can stroll to the village and interact with the local community which I find very culturally rewarding.

We found out that the lodge recently did a rebranding and appropritely named itself Barefoot which truly reflects the easy and relaxing atmosphere at the lodge. The previous name of the lodge was Sukau Tomanggong Riverview Lodge. Perhaps this is why you do not find its review here yet.

We have not stayed at the other lodges along the Sukau river but according to a group of guests here who had stayed at a couple of other lodges along the river, they found Barefoot offer the best value for what they pay. Like us, they like the carefree atmosphere here which they say none of the other lodges can match.

As for me and my family, we will definitely wan to visit this place again.

Thank you very much for that reply. I actually thought that myself about the renaming of the lodge. I was looking on the Barefoot Lodge site and in one of their photos they have a sign up saying tomanggong lodge! Its a wee bit confusing alright. Its a shame because it does seem like a very nice lodge that is much better value than the others. I'm in the process of emailing them to arrange a trip. Thanks again!

I'm back from my holiday and my 2 night stay at Barefoot. I did enjoy it there and spotted a huge amount of wildlife on my 3 cruises. The staff are very friendly and we were in fact the only guests there. Food is a mixture of chicken, seafood and mainly rice with vegatables. There is free tea and coffee provided by a machine. The services are good however the room IS basic. I was slightly surprised by the room but i suppose it is the jungle after all. Just so you don't get a shock when you arrive.... i'll describe the accommodations.

Single story individual cabins with attached shower and toilet. The photos of the outside make it look better than it actually is in my opinion. Wall fan is provided. Windows have a netting on them but bugs still get in as their are holes everywhere. We found geckos could even squeeze in. The windows have only wooden shutters on them which dont reach the end of the window so everybody can see into your room. The bed is okay ..the room is dimly lit and there is only one small wooden low table as furniture. Our door didn't lock with the key they gave us and the bolt on inside was totally misaligned and would never be able to close! Don't go here if you are conscious about safety of your valuables . Although i have to say i did trust the staff of the lodge but you never know about other guests etc.. it's not ideal. The toilet room was basic but the towels were a bit grubby and the sink water was brown. On the plus side the electric shower was modern (no cubicle, just at side of toilet). The whole room had a 8 inch gap at top with netting to outside so no erm privacy here you know! The guide told us our dinner was ready at 7 by shouting from the street outside so there is no soundproofing. But heh !

It's Borneo. You will see orangutans! (most likely). You can stick it for 2 nights! It is a good value lodge. As far as i know it's half the price of some of the others just don't expect it is be high standard cos it's verry basic. Just a step up from camping.

Hi Superduper,

I really enjoyed reading your honest and positive view of the Barefoot Sukau Lodge. We are on our way to Borneo in June. Thanks for the info. Any other tips?

Cheers

I am looking at booking the 3D2N package and got a quote for RM480 per person. I have had really quick and friendly responses to my emails from the lodge so will be booking.

Hi, we too have been quoted this price (480RM)for 3D2N and are booked for July. Our booking has been smooth and efficient. I will remember the advise about the basic cabins but am sure this will not be too inconvenient. This is Asia and not a 5star price. We are going for the wildlife and am looking forward to it immensely
