Tsavo in June?

We`re wondering how the Tsavo Nationalparks look like in June (after the long rains from March-June)? Is there lots of lush green vegetation or more like savannah landscape?

Is there still the famous red earth to see everywhere (for example at the waterholes) even if we would go in June?

Has anyone been to Tsavo East/West in June and have any pics to share?

How is the weather in June in the parks and at the coast?

Important question: Are there lots of mosquitos this time of year?

Would appreciate any answers!

Well, now that we have been to Kenya in June as well, we can answer our previous question ourselves - and maybe help others who wonder the same.

TSAVO WEST & EAST

During our safari in June 2007, we stayed - among other nationalparks - at Kilaguni in Tsavo West and at Voi Safari Lodge in Tsavo East and we enjoyed our stay very much.

LANDSCAPE & WILDLIFE

TSAVO EAST

The landscape - especially in Tsavo East is very beautiful and varied with hills, savannah landscape, swamps, Aruba dam lake, small bushes, accacia trees and the typical red earth everywhere. During our stay at Voi Safari Lodge, hundreds of elephants came to visit the waterhole with their little ones who enjoyed splashing around in the water chasing away the birds and buffalos. We enjoyed watching them from the hide for hours at mid-day. Also large herds of buffalos visited the waterhole when we were there and we also saw a lion family on game driving and a lioness with her little lion cub on our last day. The ever present rock hyraxes were a joy to watch strolling around at the lodges` gardens and sniffing on the flowers and the view over the plains which were teeming with wildlife was stunning!

TSAVO WEST

Tsavo West is an interesting park, too, but it also hides the wildlife very well because of its dense vegetation. Here, we saw lots of jackals, ostriches, giraffes, zebras and a mongoose family with little ones who had their mansion at Kilaguni Serena Lodge. Also, this time of year, all the animals had newborns and it was very interesting to see all the cute little ones playing around, suckling etc.

We also experienced the most amazing sunset and sunrises we have ever seen in these two parks.

MOSQUITOS

During our 2-week stay in Kenya in June 2007 at Neptune Paradise Village at the south coast and on safari at Tsavo West, Amboseli, Tsavo East and Shimba Hills and we only saw 2 mosquitos. (except the millions of sandflies at Neptune Paradise at Galu Beach who were a real plage though, but that is another story)

Anyway, anyone who is interested in reading more, we have written reviews for the different lodges we stayed at during this year`s holiday to Kenya here on Tripadvisor. (Neptune Paradise Village, Shimba Rainforest Lodge, Kilaguni Serena Lodge, Ol Tukai Lodge and Voi Safari Lodge) The reviews should be published on here soon.

CONCLUSION

Once again, we had a fantastic holiday and safari to Kenya. We were first worried about going in June (we were in December last holiday), but there were not any problems at all and the weather was hot and sunny, too.

June is a great month to visit Kenya and to go on safari as well and boths the Tsavo NPs are well worth a visit!

We will be back!

Hello! Would just like to say your post has been most helpful! We are too planning to visit the Tsavo national park but next year in June 2008! and feel a little worried mainly about the weather!! We understand that this is the long rain season in Kenya but have our hearts set on this month as we would like to visit for my birthday! We hope to be spending three nights in the Park and then go for a more coastal few days in a hotel. On your experience do you think it will be warm/ dry enough to enjoy? or would you recommend another time of year? did you have much rainfall when you visited? your answer/advice would be MUCH appreciated knowing you have been to the exact place we are dreaming of! hehe! thank you in advance!

Hi!

Glad we could help! Yes, June was a great month to go on safari to the Tsavo parks! Tsavo really has some stunning landscapes and plenty of wildlife! We liked Tsavo East better because of the more beautiful and more open landscape which makes wildlife easier to spot, but that`s just us. Every park is special in every season and in its own way!

Don`t worry about the temperatures! It was hot and sunny at daytime in Tsavo - we even had a light sunburn from driving in the open-roof-jeep during game drives, so don`t forget suncream! :)

And it gets a little chilly at nights this time of year - so bring a light jacket for the evenings and early-morning game drives. We had no rain at all ON SAFARI.

The "long-rain season" has often already stopped in June. You never know with the weather these days, but we had only some light rain showers at the coast - often in the early mornings, lasting a few minutes and then the sun came out again and it was sunny and blue sky again. It didn`t bother us at all.

We hope you`ll have a wonderful safari & birthday celebration in Tsavo next June!

We miss Kenya very much and we wish we can come back soon again, too!

Oooo thank you so much for your response! we are certain that we will go now but might try and push it back to the end of june/ beginning of July in an attempt to avoid any possible rain. But ultimately weather is of less importance to us than the experience of the safari as a whole! :) so we are just going to go and enjoy it! Your pics look truely wonderful! and it looks like you had a very enjoyable trip!
